Posted - Jul 23 2010 : 3:13:53 PM So while hanging linens on the line last week with my daughter we had a snake slither between us..no problem about 5 minutes later a gigantic wolf spider did the same no spider fans in my house lol we let him pass and went about our day..1 hr later thunderstorms hit we ran out to grab the linens when yepper, you guessed it, the same ole snake went between us again (my kids now lovingly call him bob)..so as the storm ended to the garden we headed to pick some squash as I walked down the much needing to be weeded aisle i felt a heavy slide on my bare foot.............I shrieked when I saw a huge black snake slither right over the top of my foot!! (was not Bob)
anyone else ever get a "garden surprise" lol
Blessed are those who can laugh at themselves, for they shall never cease to be amused:) |

Posted - Jul 24 2010 : 2:18:32 PM So far no snakes, but I was startled one day by a baby bird who flew up at me from the very grassy asparagus patch. And yes, I screamed a startled scream. I am no longer afraid of birds but at one time in my life I was terrified of them. I had wondered why all the black birds (I think cowbirds) were chirping at me. |

Posted - Jul 23 2010 : 10:38:18 PM My biggest surprise guest was the frog that hopped on my back while I was bent over weedin. I was scared to death and stood bolt upright and began bellowin for my Hubby! He came runnin and nearly fell over laughin when he seen what it was. We put the little guy back on the tomato plant, boy was I relieved! All I knew was somethin cold wet and sticky had suddenly grabbed hold of my back, and I was in a sports bra, so he was right on my bare skin! I shake the tall plants gently before weedin around them now. Our little frog is still always on that tomato plant and he's gettin pretty fat off somethin in there.

Posted - Jul 23 2010 : 8:05:48 PM No known snakes to speak of here on Long Island, a few "garter snakes"- I think I've seen maybe 3 in my lifetime here... and I have to say ..Thank Goodnes! I suppose if I knew for SURE that they were not posinous then I might be okay with them, but I'm happy just the same not coming in contact with them. Laurie- Farmgirl Sister#1403

Posted - Jul 23 2010 : 7:52:52 PM Have had snakes more than once surprise me in the gardens, they are either looking for a cool shady spot, or a rodent meal, I don't have a problem, as long as they are the non-poisenous ones.

Posted - Jul 23 2010 : 7:02:59 PM A little one popped out of my squash plants the other day too. I'm not too fond of snakes, even though I know there are little to no dangerous snakes in Michigan. They give me the creepies.

Posted - Jul 23 2010 : 3:32:08 PM lol --very cute & funny story. Guess you better come up with with a name for Bob's cousin My husband teases me because I get freaked out by the mouse visitors in my greenhouse, the rock chucks in our yard (even though it's fenced along with netting, too. We have a green snake slithering in our garden (hmm, what to name him ;-). But I think the biggest surprise that got me screaming & jumping up & down doing circles was when I was squatting in the garden doing the weeding in my clogs and I went to stand up & a lizard had come right in between my raised heel and clog. Acck! My foot went down on it & the texture & surprise... still gets me jumpy inside. My husband says, you always wanted to have a farm with critters (lol)
