I have planted 3 clematis plants in my yard in central WI, we have sandy soil in this area. Anywho all 3 are looking very sad. Can anyone give me some suggestions?

I have, or had, 3 clematis vines on an old fence. Hubby would get crazy with the weed wacker and get them every time. But they would always come cack. The last time 2 of them didn't but the one that got whacked back to the ground is coming back! I was so happy to see the poor thing. I will just have to put a cage around it.

I have got to send a big THANKS to all of the ladies that helped me save my clematis! I amended the soil and all of my plants are doing really well....so thank you for helping me out.

I found a clematis in my back field and thought it was dead but cleaned up around it and watered it and surprise it grew leaves. So even though they may look dead it might not be. Just see what happens for the rest of this year.

Thanks ladies, I REALLY appreciate your help. Here's another question-I was purning back some of the dead leaves and I accidentally pulled a leaf off and the stem under the bark was green, should I just leave it alone? Will it possibly come back next year if it looks dead?

Also the plant likes to be in the sun but the roots like to be shaded - I put a statue on one and small cantelope size rocks on the others.

Did you amend the soil, if its pure sand, there are no nutriants. Add lots of compost, working it around the plants gently, so you do not damage the roots, add some b12 also, keep damp, but not soggy, til they start to perk up, then water as needed.
