Well we might as well laugh as cry. About 3 families I know of have had a garden mishap this year and all of our plants came from the same nursery. I planted 4 hills of cucumbers and had various varietys of pumpkins. I had to research to see what was growing out there! Another lady I know had every tomatoe plant end up being cherry tomatoes. A disgruntled nursery worker? A toddler on the loose while mom read container labels? Who knows but it made for a story to tell our grandkids some day :D Anyone else have quick change artist plants this year in their garden?

I bought 12 plants labled as Italian Roam tomatoes. Some of the plants are indeed Romas, but there are some that are some other variety. As long as they make good sauce and salsa I will be happy.

Yup. I just discovered that my Mr. Stripey heirlooms are actually yellow tomatoes. I'm not too awful disappointed as I was wishing halfway through the growing season that I had planted some yellow ones but I was looking forward to the stripey tomatoes.

I also worked a a nursery garden center, also some plants are priced wrong due to the miss label of the plant. When buying a plant it is a good thing to check out the name with a person that you know has been at the garden center for a while. The nursery has a large change over in help due to being a seasonal business, it its hard to get help that can take a lay off thru the year and return.

Wow Cindy what fun to be able to distribute all those strawberry plants. Melina the rose you did get sounds pretty too. Is it doing good? My climber didnt do as well this summer. I might have been too aggressive in the pruning.Angela that recipie sounds good I bet my DD would like it also. Thanks

This is a very common problem in the nursery industry. I have managed 3 nurseries over the years and was once told by a wholesaler that it's because so many of the workers don't speak or read English. I'm not making a prejudicial statement, it's just a fact that most of the labor in the industry (indeed, in all of agriculture) is Hispanic. I can imagine a young, scared, untrained worker being handed a fistful of labels and told to mark the flats. Stuff happens.
I've had some interesting mishaps. This year I bought what I thought was an Angel Face rose. It turned out to be a tiny pink blossom, not the lavender I'd hoped for.

We bought some raspberry plants a couple of years ago, supposed to have dark red berries, turned out to have amazingly good golden ones. When my husband called them he did so, not to complain but to find out the real name, they were the best we've had from his description they were able to figure it out. They sent a replacement and now we have both.
That company has quite a few oops orders but whatever they send is so good we continue to order from them. The biggest oops we had from them was box that arrived with 1000 strawberry plants we hadn't ordered! We called and they said to use what could and give away the rest because if they were reshipped they would not be in very good shape by the time they reached their destination, they would just replace those. We shared with neighbors, family and friends as well as a local elementary science club and made a lot of people happy.

I bought 2 'tomatoberry' plants, strawberry shaped ultra sweet cherry tomatoes. I wound up with one 'tomatoberry' and one yellow cherry tomato. I didn't mind so much, but my 10y/o DD was very upset. They were her plants. I showed her how to saute the two kinds together with garlic and onion powder, then pour them over rice and toss on a little shredded cheese. She loved it and got over the mislabeled plant.
