Posted - Aug 20 2010 : 9:06:48 PM Our green beans were setting flowers and with the extreme heat dropped them. We got about 30 pints canned. Have planted some more so will see.

Posted - Aug 18 2010 : 03:25:18 AM I have a huge teepee of blue lake leaves, waiting for some beans! They survived rabbits and Japanese beetles, now just give me some beans please!

Posted - Aug 17 2010 : 6:53:26 PM Pulled up all my green beans today by the roots. Leaves fell off, so ya, not a good year. Always plant bush beans and didn't plant the usual Tendergreen, just what was available at the store. Weather is awful this year. Didn't get much corn either. Sure do hope I get a good crop of sweet taties, the plants look great, but last year before I could get them, the gophers had done their damage. grrr...
Make my words soft and tender, for I may have to eat them. :) |

Posted - Aug 17 2010 : 07:08:23 AM My BL beans were slow to start, but going gangbusters until Mr.Pocket Gopher found his way into the garden. Booo! I'm normally an animal lover, but those pocket gophers make me want to sit out there with a bb gun! |

Posted - Aug 16 2010 : 6:15:15 PM Kristin, Thanks...yes I am fine. My battery went dead. I had to call my husband and he came and picked me up on 75 in Kennesaw. I was almost there...I really wanted to be there. I hope there will be another get together. I am not giving up on my BL beans...I am going to have to take down my tomato plants that I planted earlier...they look terrible. And my cucumbers dont look any better...So I have beans and 4 tomato plants left... Deborah

Posted - Aug 16 2010 : 1:40:24 PM I always planted BL beans and never had any problems with them. They would bear all summer til I got sick of them. But this year my tiller broke and the heifer and goats got in the market garden so no green beans here. I did plant some in the other garden but only got a few messes.
Deborah, we sure missed you Sat. I hope everything's ok. We had a great time. I wish you had been there too.
Kris

Posted - Aug 16 2010 : 08:32:58 AM Don't give up hope they take a lonnnnnngggg time. I am just starting to get beans I have had floweres for a while now. I use The wonderful Miracle Grow sorry but there is not enough that I can do to amend this soil. so I use it I would like to get to a point of using compost tea but that is a couple pay checks away to get the compostion unit. I also take a knife and cut the vines off to level with my bean trellis is seems to get them to set more beans.I do the same with my watermelon pumpkins tomatoes and any thing that gets out of line it stops the growth energy from going up to producing vegs.

Posted - Aug 16 2010 : 07:54:14 AM I've planted beans several times this year, same kind as you, and have very little success. Usually they do really well. Think it may have been the weird weather patterns this year.
Give thanks to yourself everyday for all the wonderful things you do! |

Posted - Aug 15 2010 : 11:22:31 AM Watch out for deer if there are any in your area. They are crazy about Blue Lake, we got one picking before the deer ate all remaining beans and leaves! The vines remain so maybe they'll come back? The plants grew up about 8 feet on the string teepee we put up for them. And the beans are especially delicious.
