Right on schedule. When I planted the seeds and saw how long it was going to take I sighed... Sunflowers in August. Just in time for frost to start happening a month later. I hope the seeds have time to form!! I really want home grown sunflower seeds!!
I am a bit disappointed in the seed head size so far- do they get bigger after they have bloomed? I would assume they have to accomodate the mature seeds?

Last year my sunflowers were well over 10 feet tall, with huge heads. this year they are shorter than me and little bitty heads. Course summer didn't show up 'til July so they were probably discouraged. Even the peas did poorly this year and that's unheard of here.

Well I am glad I am not the only one that hasn't mastered the art of growing sunflowers. We'll see how the seed heads finsh out though!

Mine are blooming like crazy..only two of the mammoth ones I planted did well though..the ones that are doing awesome (pictures on my blog) are the bird planted ones...all the multibranching kind...but so pretty I can't bear to cut them down or pull them up. I did pull up alot of them that were shading my okra and peppers early in the season when they were about a foot tall. Mona LOVES sunflower plants!

Alee, mine are only 5 feet tall and no open flowers yet. But I'm hopeful. I planted a little late, but we sure have enjoyed watching them grow. Suzanne |

I planted them in may and they are 12 ft tall but should have 12-16 inch seed heads and mine are only 6 inches :(

Alee, I planted Mammoth and boy are they! They are at least 12' tall and have already been bent over for a month. I am going to harvest them soon for the chickens and goats. When did you plant them?

Grace- I did plant the mammoth sunflowers! That is why I am shocked that the seed heads are only about 6 inchest across (not including petals)

Hey Alee,
All I can say is when I plant sunflowers(here in Spokane)...they give me 'attitude'. But when the birds drop sunflower seeds all over, the seeds grow like weeds! what's up with that? lol!
Anyhow, none of mine did all to great, infact I have a dozen that are short & squatty and are taking their sweet bippy of a time to open...but the small thin ones are opening all over the place...
Soooooooooo next year it will be Raised Beds for everything...I am tired of replacing plants...I have seen a couple of raised beds locally & the plants are growing like gang busters...and a friend of mine who lives right outside of Moscow, ID...her sunflowers are awesome growing along the edge of her yard.....
When I lived in SO. CAL., my sunflowers were huge with seed heads being well over 12"(not including the petals)....but I didn't have deer, gophers & moles to wreck havoc nor crazy %*@ weather to contend with....
Well, Home Girl ain't playin' that game any more...next year I am planting 100 packages of seeds & if I am lucky I will get a 1/2 dozen decent sunflowers! lololol! I know, I know, I am all talk! lol!
As for the seed size, I find that to get edible seeds you need to grow the "Mammoth Sunflowers"...For the most part the other seeds, both stripes & solid black, are a great treat for the birds!
Just remember, there is always next year...
