Posted - Sep 04 2010 : 07:26:21 AM We had a thread going in the spring about growing potatoes in a bag. I have finished using up the ones I grew and I was wondering how everyone else did.
I have mixed feelings about the bag. I had only one bag and got 3 meals worth of potatoes out of it. That was it! So while it worked, I'm not sure it was worth it.
How did everyone else do?

Posted - Sep 07 2010 : 1:45:11 PM I hear ya Victoria! I will probably take all winter to decide if I want to bother with growing in the bag again too. Fortunately I didn't have any bugs in my bag! We had a very hot summer, especially for the Chicago area, and I had to water twice a day.
Thanks for telling us about your experience!

Posted - Sep 07 2010 : 12:49:51 PM Dawn, I had 6 potato bags going this year. They produced very well. The plants were beautiful and very nice looking potatoes. I got about 20-25 lbs per bag. The problems I had were ants and these little bugs that look like worms but they're not they have a hard shell. I find them alot with what we call the rolly polly bug. I don't really know what they are. They didn't seem to harm the potatoes but the ants darn near ate me up. I also have mixed feelings. I got a good crop but here in Texas where we get little rain and went 21 days straight with the temp above 100 I was watering constantly. Don't know that I will use them again next year. Still undecided.

Posted - Sep 05 2010 : 5:01:51 PM I did get beautiful potatoes without any bug problems, but I sure wish there would have been more of them. Maybe you are right about some of the plants not producing much Michele.
Sorry you didn't have a good crop either Angela. I think it was too rainy, hot and steamy for us Midwestern farmgirls!
Have fun planting next year Audrey. You can report how you did next fall.

Posted - Sep 05 2010 : 10:44:40 AM I'm growin in Indiana, so I'm close to you somewhat. My potatoes are in garden rows and didn't do well at all. The weather was a major problem this year. None of my family who grew them got much either. So you might be in the norm for your production for this year. I would give it a try one more year and see what happens.

Posted - Sep 05 2010 : 05:30:08 AM I think you did pretty good Dawn. Some plants do better then others in the garden. I got huge potatoes on some, and small on others. I bet you didn't have to deal with any slugs in your bag either. Nice to try a different way of growing things.

Posted - Sep 04 2010 : 10:06:28 PM That does sound a bit disappointing. I didn't grow along with you this year as I couldn't get everyting together in time. I did see a report on the news that Colorado potato growers (ranked 4th in the Nation) were having a miserable year due to some bug that literally blew in on the southern winds. The are harvesting nothing but small potatoes and few of them.
Looking forward to growing some next year.
