And I lose a quarter of my tomatoes to swelling/skin bursting. I was able to save some before the bugs got to them, but most had lots of bug damage.

Sorry to hear the bad news about tomatoes. I picked a ton and stewed them for freezing, since I have not mastered the art of canning yet. I remember when I was little my grandma used to par boil the tomatoes and peel the skins and then stick in containers in the freezer, so today I tried my hand at it.
