The stink bugs have invaded my home. It is simply aweful, we are sweeping up cups and cups of them, on three sides of us the farmers decided to grind up the dead corn for feed. It was like a plague had hit. The stink bugs were everywhere. Today, my land lord sprayed the house to help protect us, but it is insane how many stink bugs there are, we can't go outside and do anything because you are just swarmed with them.

Please pray for my sanity!

Thanks for sharing the article, Annika! Geez - it feels epic - almost Biblical in proportions, doesn't it? I see that they are looking for warm homes in which to hibernate... We hold out as long as humanly possible each year before putting on our heat, so I wonder if that will help? Our elderly neighbor already has had his heat on for several days, and he was out brushing them off his screen door the night before last. He look so aggitated, I felt so bad. Just so gross. - Nini

We get these too, not bucketfuls yet, but several a day some autumns. I haven't seen them this year but I thought you'd like to read the NYT
article I found on the news page. Bugs. YUCK

You poor thing! We've got em over here, too. Not sure if Thomasville is in the Pittsburgh news viewing area, but WPXI news (www.wpxi.com) just put out a report on stink bugs and apparently the best thing to do is like Julie said: spray them with plain soap and water. Also, be sure to caulk and close off every nook and cranny in your home - they are looking to come in to hibernate. They said even a small crack in the window screen is an invitation for them! Also, they said older homes are more susceptible to them because they usually have a lot more openings due to their age (isn't that delightful?). The poor lady in the report - her home was INFESTED with them! They did say in the report if you're finding a lot of them, the best thing to do is call an exterminator, though - or you'll never get rid of them. They get in everything, too! I am finding a few every day - inside and out. Mostly, I've just been vaccuuming them with a shop vac. My husband said at work the job they're on has an infestation, too - it's horrible. We went to the store a few days ago and came out to find 7 - SEVEN - on my van... one crawled right behind my driver's side rear view mirror - I was sooo upset! The very first time in my life I ever saw one was last winter during those harsh snowstorms - it was crawling up my living room curtain. I couldn't get over it! In the dead of winter. We did have a couple more after that, but they really started showing themselves this summer. We're not infested, but I am finding them far more often than I'd like. They aren't moving quickly, but they sure do fly - I had one fly at me and about fell over! I also don't think we've had the pleasure of "smelling" one yet, thank God. I understand the odor lasts for-e-ver. Uck. I really, really feel for you, Emily, I do. Hang in there! - Nini

I feel for you. We're in Maryland. This is the 3rd year we've had them. Every year they get worse. Thursday last week we sucked up 100 inside in the shop vac. I dont like to use chemicals, but I've had it with these things. We bought Talstar from Southern States. Safe for pets and people once it dries. I sprayed the entire outside of the house friday morning. Had 50 in the house friday evening. Sunday we only found 12 and they werent moving to fast.

We've also used the Hot Shot foggers in the attic. Once they stop moving around outside and seem to be settled in for the winter.

Last year I used the bug spray recipe on here. It works if you spray it right on them. The soap is what does them in. The only problem with this is you have to spray it on them, no residual effect like the Talstar.

Also tried a desk lamp over a dish of soapy water. Leave the light on at night, they are attracted to that and get in the soapy water then you toss out the next day.

Bed bugs and stink bugs are being major infestations right now...yuck. I'm not at all fond of bugs. There was an article on Google news this morning about them.

I just watched a video about this. Bless your heart! I saw a man collecting them in his house and I thought, you know, I'd just go buy a cheap vacuum or use a ShopVac for that!!!

I'm sorry you're having to experience that, stink bugs have a hideous odor...

Emily, I hope they are gone soon. I was just reading someone's blog about this very same thing happening. How everything's so crazy mixed up these days. Those bugs are very nasty. I hope they get them taken care of really soon. I am so sorry you are having to deal with this.
