I am new to this forum. Any information for keeping deer out of vegetable garden, besides putting up a fence? They have eaten up my green beans, tomato plants, okra this Fall, did not have this problem in my Spring garden.

Thanks for any ideas.

Bonnie

Whatever you do,don't waste any money on "deer deterrents." They don't work...and that was an expensive lesson we learned. I now. have an 8 ft fence and it is the only thing that has worked! But if you just want ornamental types of plants, they don't as a rule bother strong herbs like lavender, sage, mints or thymes.

The very best fencing is solid wood that they can't see over or through. They won't jump into a place they can't see. I have 6 ft. fencing around the back and have never had a deer out there, but they maraude the front yard.

People are going to tell you all sorts of things work like human hair, irish spring soap, blood meal, the scarecrow sprinkler or sprinkling cayenne pepper around the garden. The truth is none of these really work and you are just wasting your money. Solution: Fencing, it is the only way you are truly going to keep the deer out of the garden. Sorry if that isn't what you wanted to hear, but it is the solution.

Lillian

PS if I leave my gate open by accident and a deer wanders in the very first thing they eat is my cayenne peppers everytime. So I don't know why people think sprinkling cayenne pepper around their garden works.

My SIL has an electric fence about 18" off the ground (just one strand) around her garden. It works like a charm, unless she forgets to turn it on at night. It's like they know it's off. Personally, we have an 8 foot fence around our garden. Around here, we call them "cloven-hooved-rat-bast@!*s" !!!

I hear ya Bonnie,
I have tried nearly everything from soap shavings, hair, to spray repellants and it seems my deer are dilligent about munching on or even worse walking on what ever they don't eat!
I have so many Arborvite's bush/hedge that are both munched on & broken from being stepped on.
I have noticed they don't bother the Broccoli so I am thinking I need to plant MORE Broccoli and less of everything else that I love & want! lol!
We did have to put up a 6ft garden fence to keep the deer out of my garden,,,but go figure...the gophers borrowed under! uugghh!
