I live high in the Rockies where there is almost no growing season. I would like to have some indoor herbs or edibles that do well inside. Does anyone have any suggestions? |

LOL! I used to be the same Sherri! After years of trial and error I was able to grow a lot in the south. But the climate and weather here are SO different from what I am used to!  |

I guess it is something I will have to research! We are renting a tiny apartment now because I am going back to college. But a few herbs to start would be good... I would feel like I am growing something! I probably don't have the space for big veggies until we get a house. How about any flowers that do well inside? Especially dry and cold? I am used to living in hot, humid and at sea level so I have no clue. I only have an aloe plant that I saved from a garage sale now! |

I wish I could grow things indoors! I need to find a way to put a table by my front window to line plants up on. That's the only window that gets enough sun, and the couch is in front of it! Of course, I have a terrible history of killing house plants, so maybe I'll start slowly. I did buy a christmas cactus this year, and it's still alive so maybe that is a good sign!

Rosemary is a good idea. I am afraid to start too much and have it fail! We only get a lot of sun in our upstairs bedroom, so that is a problem too. It is SO dry here as well. We have only lived up here for a year, and I used to have a garden and miss it. Especially flowers! Thanks for your ideas! |

I am growin lettuce, carrots, and beets in an indoor greenhouse. I have seen research that shows you can grow onions, turnips, rutabagas, cabbage, and leeks inside as well. If you had the space green beans and peas are an option as well since they pollinate themselves before the flowers open up! If you google self pollinating vegetables you can find lots of info on the subject. You can even use heirloom seed since the self pollination of most plants is a natural act. Some new 'varieties' of some open pollinated plants, such as tomatoes, are comin on the market, but I don't trust them. I try to stay as natural as possible.

I have had really good luck growing rosemary indoors. I mean keeping a started plant going all winter. I usually get some spring lettuce growing in flats in early spring as well..just a mesclun mix. Need a really sunny south facing window for that but they do pretty well. Basil, dill and thyme have done well for me as well. I am lucky to have a very very big south facing window in the living room and all winter I keep a table right by it to grow things, and start my garden seedlings there as well. We are only at 5,500 so not as high up as you but still have to start them inside. Good luck
