I am wanting to start a berry patch.Blackberry, raspberry ,and blueberry.A small patch. Some people are trying to discourage me.They say it will get out of control.I want to keep them on a trellis so they are more easily weeded, and picked.I need some input from my sisters-please!

We have a raised bed devoted to raspberries in the garden and it produces enough for us and the birds. I am hoping to add some blueberries this year, and will be interested to hear how your berries go!

In a few years when you have homemade berry jam in January you will be so happy that you listened to the farmgirls!

It is very manageable and I'm sorry others are telling you otherwise. We have a neighbor with a beautiful blackberry patch and we are putting in raspberries this year. You do right ahead and plant those puppies!

Thank you so much! I knew I could count on farmsisters to give me the boost I needed! I think it will be wonderful to have fresh berries to do endless things with! I have 3 thornless blackberries, and 2 of @ raspberries and blueberries. I understand the blueberries like acid-type soil. I am excited now! Thanks so much!

Ditto!

We started out with 10 teensy canes and now have a very managable and healthy patch consisting of 2 raspberry varieties.

Both types are trellised for easier picking.

First 2 years I had to use bird netting, but now we get so many there's enough for everyone.

I don't mulch, but may this year. I do weed to give the small desirable runners a head start and also to seethem better so they don't get pulled again or stepped on.

Haven't tried blueberries but will take that next step very soon when threat of frost is gone.

Our raspberry canes came via mail order from something like Park's Seeds or one of the other well known seed/flower catalogs.

It will only get out of control if you ignore it for years on end!! Mulch heavily around the canes and they will "contain" easier... if they persist in sending up runners, pot those puppies up and sell them as berry starts!!
