Posted - Mar 05 2011 : 11:12:54 AM My husbands family owns a tobacco seed/plant company. We've got a greenhouse that took quite a bit of damage this pass fall/winter. I've now got a HUGE PILE of clear plastic to try and re-purpose-I'd hate to see it go to the landfill-we're having to recover it with new plastic this year.
Any ideas? I know I can't put it down in my garden, as it will help weeds grow, but, I just can't seem to think of anything useful to do with it!

Posted - Mar 05 2011 : 1:21:40 PM PS. Our operation is a business, so we keep that greenhouse at a steady 80+ degrees almost all year with heating/cooling systems-it's got aerial mowers in it and everything as well. The holes and tears let in the cold air, which makes the heat come on more often, which is $$ out of our pockets. We've repaired it quite a few times, but this last fall the wind literally ripped the plastic off, creating huge stretches/tears, rendering it useless.

Posted - Mar 05 2011 : 1:19:10 PM It's got holes and tears in it. We had very high winds this year, and it ripped the plastic off the greenhouse completely. It's not repairable :( It's clear plastic, so it can't be used to line my garden, either.

Posted - Mar 05 2011 : 12:21:37 PM I need to get our greenhouse back up. We just used regular plastic and that didn't last long at all. The wind just whipped it all over. I hope to be able to get some thicker ml plastic and start using it again.
I don't know if I am understanding your question, Megan. You have all this plastic, can it be used for the greenhouse?

Posted - Mar 05 2011 : 12:16:22 PM ours is also rounded top, and quite large, with float beds. Anyway, we bought our plastic from a local guy, but you may be able to buy the plastic from a greenhouse supply place-my husband says its pretty cheap to buy:

Posted - Mar 05 2011 : 11:58:32 AM Megan, I don't think I have any idea yet what you could do, but I am wondering what kind of green house covering you had and what you are going to cover the frame with. The reason I ask, is that about 18 years ago, we mail ordered purchased a rounded top metal frame green house from VA...I think. It had a fitted opaque rip stop covering with a zippered door. It was marvelous for our cold Springs & Falls. This last winter, there were many slits in the covering...and the zippered door tore leaving it flap in the breeze. The company has gone out of business and so we want to find another covering. Unfortunately, I haven't been able to locate something for us. Can you tell me what you are recovering your greenhouse with? Any help for anyone would be appreciated.
