Posted - Apr 01 2010 : 4:40:58 PM I also read that deer hate human hair. A lot of folk go to beauty shops and barbers get it by the bagfulls, plus it eventually just melts into the earth without harm. ;-).

Posted - Apr 01 2010 : 4:23:04 PM My dad always put sprinkled hot peppers on his plants to keep the deer away and it worked well for him, the deer usually came over to my house and ate.
Hope all your days are Sunnydays. dianebcarterhotmailcom.blogspot.com |

Posted - Apr 01 2010 : 1:45:44 PM That sounds like a good idea. Wonder if it would work to sprinkle some around the fence area too ; to keep the calves from getting under the fence? Hubby get so mad Poor guy worked all day yesterday on the fence and the dang calves still got in, hugs sheila

Posted - Apr 01 2010 : 12:07:03 PM My grandmother had heard to use moth balls but I'm not sure how ecologically sound that is. One thing though, and I might be weird... but I like the way moth balls smell. Yep, I'm weird. lol

I know how you feel! I had a moose continuously walk "through" our fence and step on all my plants as it passed through! ( I solved that with a bright orange snow fence. . catches the eye of everyone including the moose. . .they have very poor eyesight, so now that he could "see" the fence he walked around it!)
As far as the cows and deer, maybe a raised garden is in order. The cows won't step up into a raised bed and the deer, well they need a good deterrent or they simply keep coming back. A dog that loves to chase deer is a good thing sometimes , motion lights at night tend to keep them away too. However. . . if someone is feeding the deer and they have been desensitized to humans , you will need to be very clever and persistent. Keep in mind deer can jump an 8' fence with ease. . . I have seen this first hand.
Good luck.

Posted - Mar 31 2010 : 8:53:13 PM I try to plant things the deer don't like. I have a native wildflower garden. Most wildlife will not eat wildflowers. Here in Oklahoma I grow Black Eyed Susan, Coneflowers, Indian Blanket, Tick Weed, Spider Wort, Compass Plant, Pincushion Plant and Mexican Hat. They are all prairie flowers and need lots of sun. They have beautiful blooms, they don't need much water, they are pretty much pest free and they reseed themselves each year. Can you tell I really love native plants. Dana

Posted - Mar 31 2010 : 11:42:46 AM That's strange. I've never heard that before. Do they fear each other?...hate the smell of each other? hmmmm...?What?
