This is an old photo-The picket fence extends the length of the property, around my Mr. McGregor's potting shed and perennial beds and along the garage....lots and lots of pickets.
I'm itching to re-paint it a deep forest green...
Does a picket fence have to be white?
Feeling a little radical lately and need some advice!

Posted - Apr 30 2012 : 8:04:13 PM Good Luck Melody! I am sure it will look nice in the deep green to match the trim. ANd, and the risk of sounding repetative....you can always buy some more white paint if you dont like it! LOL Would love to see a picture of a test section!

Posted - Apr 30 2012 : 6:34:19 PM Actually, I did paint the railings a deep forest green last year and I loved the way that turned out!
Can't wait for it to warm up here so I can get going...

Posted - Apr 30 2012 : 4:17:50 PM What if you just tried painting your stair railing? That would be very pretty and you would still have a picket fence in the traditional white. I think the green hand railing would set off nicely against your porch.

Posted - Apr 29 2012 : 4:30:27 PM I think if your trim is all dark green, your fence just might look good matching the trim. Doing just a section first is a good idea. Go for it, and do be sure to post a picture.

Posted - Apr 29 2012 : 07:28:54 AM My mother in law has a beautiful blue picket fence around her flower garden, it is a nice touch. Green I think can be risky with blending in too much but...last summer we painted our whole house green. We have lots of grass and pasture around so my husband was afraid the hose would be less obvious than they boring grey it was. People (and we) love it. It is striking and wonderful, it doesn't seem to blend in but rather compliment it's surroundings. Good luck on deciding. Generally I would say go with your gutt and it will be great.

Posted - Apr 28 2012 : 2:47:08 PM I agree you should do what you want - it's YOUR house!! And you are a creative farmgirl with lots of ideas! It certainly doesn't have to be white. But I would wonder if green would blend in too much? I guess you won't know until you try it. And if you do it and decide you don't like it, all you need is more paint!

Posted - Apr 28 2012 : 2:37:40 PM Hey Mel, Nope, a picket fence doesn't have to be white. Personally, I like white picket fences. But, as the other gals say, do what your little farmgirl heart desires to do . . . cuz we gotta do what our creative little farmgirl hearts lead us to. I know I do! CJ

Posted - Apr 28 2012 : 2:29:52 PM Melody! I love your house and your picket fence!!! I think you should go for it - it's your home, you should paint your fence however you feel will make you happiest! Besides - paint is very forgiving and not super expensive...I'm with Marly on that. If you don't like it, you can always paint over it! I do like the white, but I think green could be very pretty, too... maybe a paler shade of green... like a green-washed whitewash, you know? Then again, dark might be pretty, too. A lady on the other side of town painted hers a rustic red, and it looks beautiful - so don't be afraid to give it a try! Whatever you decide, I'm sure it will be beautiful. You have great taste! Just please post pictures, okay? I'll be anxious to see when it's finished! Hugs - Nini

Posted - Apr 28 2012 : 1:20:48 PM Melody, I say do what you like, it is your house and your fence. However, I would keep it white. Of course, if you do paint it green and not like it, you can always repaint it white or another color. If you do paint the fence green, I'd love to see a picture. I don't think I've ever seen a green picket fence. Thanks for sharing. Lovely house. Marly
