I saw this article in the latest MJ mag. I am very doubtful of buying any food from Mexico. I live in Texas and have had and have heard of many people's doctors telling them never to eat anything grown in Mexico. Even my SIL's cardiologist warned her not to eat any of it. Washing hand practice and using human waste as compost are the two reasons that I have been told.
Does anyone have a link to studies that show the safety of the food coming in from Mexico? Please share if you do.

Mexico does use untreated water to irrigate their crops, which means raw sewage, antibiotics, anything can be in the irrigation water. San Diego beaches are closed at times because untreated sewage from Mexico is carried north to our shores. So, I wouldn't feel better about buying produce that is grown closer to CA. I tend to bypass Mexican produce at this point.
Most travelers get sick from the water. And those who remember to drink only bottled water, sometimes overlook having ice in their drinks or eating salad or something that was "washed" in water, and still become sick.

For me, I will buy organic. My family has become so amazingly healthy since going only organic. It's changed my life completely. I'm not crazy about buying the organic products from China, though, because I once heard a rumor about the food from there. Heard those are not regulated as well, but nothing I buy comes from China anyways. Most of our organic food is from American farms, but if it's a choice between American conventional tomatoes and organic ones from Mexico, I will go for organic every time.

Well why buy from Mexico when we can buy from our own country and support Americans? Half of our agriculture jobs are already taken by non tax paying illegals, why take more funds away from our own country?

There is a segment of the Hispanic population that is VERY green, very concerned with living sustainably. Lots of the Mexicans who are growing organic food came to the U.S. to learn how.

I agree with Dawn. I think the difference in produce from Mexico is conventional versus organic. I too read that organic produce in Mexico must comply with USDA standards. I also read that many of the organic farmers in Mexico are small time, family owned and so you are also likely supporting small farms when buying organic.

I was watching Rick Bayless show, "Mexico, One Plate at a Time" and he stated that organic farming began in Mexico in 1996. I have read that 98% of the organic produce is for export and they must meet USDA standards for organic growing. I plan to research a lot more before making a snap judgment on hearsay.

Mexico is kind of a big country... it might make a difference of you are getting produce from near california, or near New mexico or near Texas.

I've heard the same thing. I have been to Mexico twice. Never did get sick from the food, but my sister did; both times.
