Posted - Jul 26 2012 : 08:16:39 AM I have burned up more vacuums in the last twenty years than I can count. My latest one only lasted 1 year and 3 months. It wasn't the cheapest, but not the most expensive either. We do have a pretty large home with a high-shedding dog and two elderly cats, that I swear should be bald considering the amount of fur I vacuum up. Anyway, the latest vacuum had a piece of plastic break off inside and is un-fixable. Really???? I am so annoyed by this, but have to get another one. Curious...what kind do you have and how long has it lasted?

Posted - Jul 28 2012 : 6:59:33 PM I've got a Rainbow as well, had it for about 6 years now and LOVE it. No problems whatsoever and I use it on all the floors (carpet and whatever that stuff is in the rest of the kitchen/bathroom-- maybe vinyl) I also like mine since we have a very dust producing cockatoo inside, I put the canister near her cage, turn it on low and it helps keep the dust down. It's been well worth what I paid for it. I also got the smaller "rainmakers" to put in each room to help clean the air, they work wonderfully.

Posted - Jul 28 2012 : 6:16:47 PM I buy everything I can from Best Buy because DH works there and has a killer discount. Special tip-- on vacuums, buy the "protection plan". If you're hard on your appliances like I am it covers all repairs, or replacement. Basically, I just figure when I buy a protection plan that I'm paying $9... $15... whatever for the appliance I hope I won't need but probably will in the next year or two. Best Buy and Sears have the best protection plans (read: hassle free.) Walmart and other companies I've dealt with not so much-- they will sell you protection but want any excuse NOT to let you redeem it.

Posted - Jul 28 2012 : 4:01:37 PM Well...I was all set to order another Dyson via internet (best price), when today I was in Costco. I remember Kathryn said here about the "Ball" not having as good suction, so I wanted to look at the regular type Dyson as well as the ball one. I could not believe how much they changed since I bought my original one when they first came out. No offense, but they seem really flimsy compared to the one I had. Anyway, there was a vacuum at Costco on special, the Electrolux "Nimble", and ya would have thought they were having a fire sale, with everyone grabbing them. I really like how it has more metal on it than plastic, and it "swivels" like the Dyson ball, but seemed not as "plastic". It's got this neat little 3 in 1 tool that does floors, stairs, shelves, corners, etc. Called DH from the store and he looked online and it got rave reviews and 5 stars everywhere, and is $399 at Target. I got mine at Costco today, and it was $199 regular, but today's special dropped it down to $159 since they had a $40 price reduction at the cash register. Hooray! Been vacuuming and have much of the main floor done, and the stairs. Holy cow...was my house THAT dirty?! Yikes! I swear it looks like Darth Vader's vacuum, and is really easy to use. Let's hope this one lasts longer than a year! Thanks, girls, for all your input. Really did help us. :)

Posted - Jul 27 2012 : 06:15:52 AM Thanks everyone. I'm going to get one tomorrow...just need to make a final decision. My last one is the Bissel, just like CJ's. I bought all the "extras", but a plastic piece inside the beater brush housing broke making it un-fixable. My thought is to buy another one just like it, and hope it was a fluke thing, so I can use all my extras. Feel like it shouldn't have happened. My second thought is to get a Dyson. Like so many of you, that was the one that lasted the longest. I had a first generation Dyson that lasted a long time. Looked at the Oreck online, but I really don't want to have to fool with bags. Either way, it's such a bummer that mine broke now. @Marly: Your post made me laugh out loud! :)
Hugs, Nicole

Posted - Jul 26 2012 : 6:23:08 PM I have an Oreck. I love, love, love it! It is lightweight and when I bought mine for 299. I also got the small canister and a hand mixer. I wouldn't trade any of them for anything. I have gotten good deals on the bags for them online at their site. They send me emails to let me know about the bag sales. It goes from carpet to bare floors easily and gets all the animal fur. I have had mine for about 8 yrs. and as far as I know they have not gone up in price. Seems to help with the allergy issues also. I went the gamut with the cyclone type and the fantoms which were great but didn't hold up very long. Hope you can find what you are looking for!

Posted - Jul 26 2012 : 6:04:48 PM Dyson, Dyson, Dyson! I will never own another brand. I have two labs that shed like crazy, four boys and lots of dirt. The suction is so good that it will pull the huge area rug off the floor if I don't keep it moving. One thing though...I had the Dyson ball (purple) and the suction wasn't as good so I returned it. If I use a vacuum at a friend's house of church I am always convinced that something is wrong because I cannot feel it working at all. With the Dyson there is NO doubt that thing is pulling dust from the root of your rugs.

Posted - Jul 26 2012 : 5:02:21 PM I know I have one, but I have no idea what the name of it is. I know that I hate to vacuum. I'd love to burn my vacuum up. Marly

Posted - Jul 26 2012 : 4:39:45 PM I got sucked in and bought a Rainbow vaccuum... the type that uses water in the basin. That was 7 years ago. I haven't had any problems with mine and I live on a small farm with all kinds of dirty and lots of pets and critters! I really must say its the best one I've ever owned. It was a pretty penny too ($1600) but now that I've had it this long and its still truckin along, I'd say its well worth the price I paid. Before that I was replacing vaccuums about every other year at several hundred dollars each. Happy Cleaning! :)

Posted - Jul 26 2012 : 4:30:22 PM ORECK!!!! Made in the USA!! Very light, long cord, no adjustment to go from carpet to hardwood or vinyl. Great warranty. Reliable company. The Dyson I had was so heavy & bulky; it was a cannister vac though. It looked like something that Bill Murray would wear in Ghostbusters. Like you Nicole, I have burned up more vacs than you can imagine (including the Dyson) I can honestly say, that when I plug in my Oreck, (every month.. Ha Ha , just kidding... sort of), I know it will not let me down. Even hubs uses it. I mean no disrespect to the Dyson lovers, but I gotta go with USA made when I can. Also, any repairs can be done by a local Oreck dealer, which are very easy to find. Although we have never had the need.

Posted - Jul 26 2012 : 12:16:38 PM Another Dyson fan here. Mine does a great job and picks up everything. My only complaint is the cord is too short for some of my rooms & I have to switch outlets.
Best of luck finding one that does the job for you.

Posted - Jul 26 2012 : 11:38:20 AM I agree with Deb, I too have a Dyson and have had it almost 3 years with out any problems ever. It really is true what they say in the commercials- it NEVER looses suction, regardless of how full that canister gets! I have 2 kids, in and out all of the time with tons of friends, plus a large dog that sheds. I really like it alot (that is if its possible to LIKE a vacuum....LOL). Good luck in your quest Nicole! Posted - Jul 26 2012 : 10:22:19 AM Love my Dyson! I live a block from a quarry and have gravel alley's, not to mention us girls (3) with longish hair, 1 dog and a cat. This thing picks up everything. Even my hubby is impressed with it - still after 3 years. He's just amazed at how much it cleans.

Posted - Jul 26 2012 : 10:18:36 AM I have a Bissell Powergroom Dual Cyclonic Pet . . . got it because of a dog and a cat and a lot of country dirt. I've been very happy with it. It doesn't take bags, it has a canister you just empty. Has a hepa filter and a foam filter which I replace periodically, however the foam one can be washed. And, I also take all the parts into the canister apart and wash them. Bought it at Walmart but I don't remember exactly how much, but I'm pretty sure less than $200. My only complaint is . . and this is NOT because of the machine . . . Walmart here quit stocking belts! For crying outloud. So, when I had to replace a belt I had to order online and wait . . in the meantime my carpet was NEEDING vacuumed. I ordered extras and also ordered two new beater/brush bars. Anyway, I DO like it. And, my husband complains about vacuum cleaners, no matter what . . . he's afraid of them! Hope that helps! CJ

Posted - Jul 26 2012 : 09:25:41 AM I have a Kenmore canister with the pet hair attachment. It cleans great but is very heavy for me around. It's also loud, or at least hubby complains about the noise but since our house is so small, any vacuum would be loud. I used it in our former house which was 3 stories and it did a good job on the carpeted stairs. Consumer Reports lists it as a best buy and I think I'd buy it again.

Posted - Jul 26 2012 : 08:29:02 AM I have a Meile cannister which cost about $300 and was recommended because I have 4 high shedding dogs and hard surfaces. I'm not in love with it, honestly. The size is great, but the bags are OUTRAGEOUSLY expensive and tiny, and it bugs the crap out of me to plop down $24.00.
