Posted - Aug 03 2012 : 10:29:48 AM I just got an email from a fellow farmgirl, stating that she had taken a trip to London, been mugged and was in terrible financial distress. It asked that I send her $2k british pounds to help her pay for her hotel room and other expenses.
Luckily I am aware this is a scam and so I assume her email was hacked. I know this farmgirl and that email was definitly not written by her.
So just a word to the wise-even if an email comes in from someone you know- don't assume it is legit. Also never wire or send funds without speaking to the person at least over the phone first.
Also please consider changing your passwords every quarter or more frequently to prevent online fraud schemes.

Posted - Aug 08 2012 : 02:20:11 AM Got one of those as well a while ago, plus mails with only a link. I never, never answer to either and just throw them away and block them if possible. It is indeed a perfect idea to change passwords frequently as well, just as an added security

Posted - Aug 06 2012 : 7:12:05 PM I've had emails like that, too. It isn't the person's fault -- their email account was hijacked, probably by a 'bot, and it happened once to me, that people were receiving weird messages from "me" that they knew were screwy. I've noticed that this happens with email accounts with a fairly common name in front of the "@" and yahoo.com or hotmail.com after. Probably randomly generated, I don't know. (That's way over my head, Brian!) The "fix" is to change the password on that account. I've also heard that gmail accounts are a little less prone to this kind of abuse. Is that true, anyone know? |

Posted - Aug 06 2012 : 5:24:28 PM Brian- No they didn't come through the forum, they were from when I emailed with a farmgirl privatly and I know she has been very active on the forum in the past and figured I wasn't the only one on her contact list. I would definitly let you or Gabe know if it came through the forum! :)

Posted - Aug 06 2012 : 1:26:20 PM Brian, I don't know about Alee, but I got the same emails and they did NOT come through the chatroom. They were to look like they came from her email directly. CJ

Posted - Aug 06 2012 : 12:07:59 PM Hi Alee,
Did those spam emails originate from the chat room or were they a farmgirl who you had emailed with previously? You would know they came from the chat room if the subject read "Sent from MaryJanesFarm Farmgirl Connection by XXXXX". If it was sent through the chat room please let me know so that the offender's account can be locked.
Thanks,
~Brian |

Posted - Aug 06 2012 : 06:28:54 AM This is so true; my bestys husband lost $3,000 to a scam just like this when trying to rent out a summer cottage! And watch out on Craigslist, last week my daughter put up two items of ours on Craigslist, and received 2 similar scams to pay for it; they wanted the items sight unseen. She reported the scam artist to Craigslist! |

Posted - Aug 05 2012 : 12:44:34 PM I change my passwords to my email account, my Facebook account and my credit card and bank accounts on a frequent basis. There is just TOOOOOOOOOOOOOO MUCH HACKING!!!! It's kinda hard to keep up with it all, but I just don't want to (hopefully) have to recover from those situations. CJ

Posted - Aug 04 2012 : 08:49:43 AM I didn't get that one, Alee, but I have gotten a few from farmgirls that have links to websites without any other information. I don't open anything like that, for sure. A good friend from back home emailed a bunch of us after receiving similar emails and suggested we change our passcodes as well. I have had to do this twice now, so I'm not sure if doing so really works or not, but I'm definitely going to keep doing so until this stops. Drives me nuts!
Thanks for the heads up!
