08/12/12: The good news for my hubby and his art pieces . . ALL IS NOT LOST! Gallery owner had taken some pieces to Telluride to the Mountain Village market and actually sold several pieces just this past week! We are soooooooo thankful for that! We still don't know, for sure, what was still in the gallery and probably lost!
As for other artists . . we are praying! But we don't know anything about anyone elses pieces.
The buildings are barricaded off while the arson investigation continues!
Thanks for your kind thoughts, comments and prayers!
CJ
*************

In July 1994 we lost our home, everything in it and all our natural wooded area on three sides to a fire that was an arson fire! I KNOW how that feels to be the "victim" of that kind of crime!

Soooooo many of the wildfires around the US this summer have been started by arsonists! These losses are astronomical and life-changing! God help those people!

We were setting up our booth this morning at our local Farmers Market and one of our fellow vendors asked us if we heard about a fire in a nearby town where two businesses burned in the middle of the night Thursday night. The reason he asked us is one of those businesses was an art gallery where my husband had, on display and for sale, some of his woodturnings/artwork. We had not heard about the fire, but another vendor had a copy of today's newspaper and there was an article and pictures.

While this is not as devastating to my hubby or me, personally, as our fire in 1994, it was a shock! It was discouraging, disheartening, and is taking us some time to "get our head around it". After market was over, we came home, had lunch and then drove the five miles to see what we could see. The gallery owner was there talking with the owner of the other destroyed business. She was able to tell my hubby that not ALL of his pieces were in the gallery. She owns a gallery in Telluride, CO as well and had taken some of his pieces up there. And, because she's also doing the market in Telluride had some in her vehicle for transport. Until we get opportunity to get to inventory info we don't really know what WAS lost in the fire other than his beautiful display unit (ironwork and granite) that he built.

Here is a pic of the gallery. The debris in the lower part of the pic was out in the street until they needed to open up the street for traffic again and get it out of the way, so it got pushed back into the rest of the building. The other business is on the left.

This is one of Bill's aspen bowls that WAS in the gallery off to the side and found turned upside down. Aspen wood is NOT black . . it is light colored.

It could have been worse, and we are grateful it wasn't. But it has affected a LOT of people and several other artists, as well the owners of both businesses. We feel very badly for them as it has a huge impact on their lives.
There is NO WAY to describe the feelings one has when you are the victims of crime! We've been through more than one burglary (in Phoenix) and my car has been burglarlized by having windows busted out and things stolen . . and the fire that took out our house!
Makes me SOOOOOOOO ANGRY!!!!
Thanks for letting me rant!

We just got home from a trip to Bowling Green. When we got onto the rural highway that leads to our road, about a 35 mile trip, we passed about 10 fires on the roadside and starting tppread into the tinder dry fields. I called 911 and they said the truck was on it's way already. They sent a little pickup with a tank on the back with a garden hose - they had no idea the number of fires that we'd passed. These were obviously arson. What kind of mind would do such a thing? It makes me sick.

Just thought I'd mention, if you go to the "aspenforge" blogspot you can see that aspen bowl "before". Not all of his pieces are pictured there, but that one is and we don't know about the mesquite bowl yet, along with many others.

CJ, I am so sorry to hear the news. There are some cruel people in this world. I pray that the arsonist will be caught and that justice will be served.

I am so thankful that no one was hurt by this or killed...things can be replaced in one way or another though its the violation thats so painful to many.....& it hurts peoples hearts when someone does things like this...especially artists who put their hearts & souls into their work...for some of us its like you took away a part of us personally...but again so thankful no one was hurt & I do hope the insurance can get this worked out to the happiness of everyone involved.....Michele'

Amen on seeing the blessings, CJ. We've gone through two floods and choose to see the blessings left behind.

I am so sorry to hear of these devastating losses. Things like this make me furious! Now they're saying that the fires in Oklahoma were started by arsonists! Am I the only one who remembers a national news broadcast that said there was an intercepted message from an Alkida (spelling?) cell that they had a plan to torch the western US? It was on either ABC or CBS about six weeks ago.

Thanks again, girls! Bill and I are not personally suffering too much in this particular situation. It is disheartening to see the loss of his pieces because they were done with love and great skill and took a LOT of time.
Our recovery from our house fire was a miracle from God . . . there ARE some things you just can't replace and the evidence is still here. We are reminded regularly of that ordeal, however we are reminded of the blessings God showered on us through it, as well.
Our hearts and prayers are for those who HAVE suffered huge losses this year in all these fires . . homes, businesses, lives . . . and since we KNOW HOW that is, it just brings it all "home" to us. There is nothing like watching a fire burn down your home! Or cleaning up the mess! Or rebuilding! (The arsonist who started the fire that burned our home was never found, either)
Our prayers are also that the perpetrator will be found and judged properly . . . in ALL the arson situations.
Anyway, thanks again for listening, caring ahd sharing.

Wow! Ceejay,

Skip and I know exactly what you and hubby are going through.
We lost our very first home in 1977 to fire. Why are people so
cruel? I hope they catch whoever did this. Arsonists seem to
get their kicks out of other peoples misery. Do they not understand
they bring fear to their victims that stay for a lifetime? They
just do not care. How sad.

Please know that your family is in my prayers. Give hubby a hug,
and tell him to give you one. They are from me.

Hugs

CJ, I am so sorry for your troubles. It is incredibly difficult to fathom why someone would do such a thing. So many troubled people in this world. I can't imagine the sadness your husband felt to see his artwork ruined like that. I do hope the insurance matter is settled quickly and satisfactorily.

I know you will keep your usual upbeat manner throughout this ordeal. Please know my thoughts and prayers are with you.

I, too, understand, CeeJay, Our farm business was struck by an arsonist about 20 years ago and it put my husband out of work for 6 months while he rebuilt the building and the business!! He operated on letting folks charge items until their crops came in and some of them thought that since the business burned down, they didn't owe him anymore..so we lost that way too!! We had 4 kiddos at the time. I never will forget going down there during the early morning hours and the gun ammunition he sold was shooting off and flying everywhere!!
The inspectors told us that unless they caught someone with a match to the property it was hard to press charges,,,It was a mess to clean up and the rebuild.....never caught the person....To bad people cannot respect what others work so hard for!! Hope all comes out for you..It is a heart sickening feeling!! Hugs, Beth

You can never be to kind!

Melody,
They did indicate there are issues with insurance because it was arson. However, because the fire STARTED in the business next door and spread to the gallery, the gallery may come out okay on the insurance. But it'll be a while, I understand, before it all gets worked out.
This kind of criminal activity just makes me want to spit nails!!

Oh...I am sorry CJ. How awful! Because it is arson does it affect whether or not they get the insurance?

What is wrong with people who feel the need to destroy?

Thanks girls! The gallery owner did not indicate if they had any leads on the arsonist. They did find the area where the accelerant was used to start the fire at the back of the business next door.
Thanks much!

That is so sad CJ and I am so sorry for everyone concerned and your little town. I remember you taking Marilyn and I there when we visited you and Bill in April, you wanted to show us the shop, his beautiful display and his pieces that were in the window. Wow, how can and why do people do this, why do they enjoy destorying other folks properties. I too will never understand how some people think. Do they have any idea yet who did it?
Keeping all of you in my thoughts and prayers and that they find who did this very soon and they are punished for their crimes.
Hugs,
Debbie
