Posted - Aug 10 2012 : 10:49:02 AM Had DH and DS haul my newly "stripped" and refinished blanket chest into the house yesterday and thought I would show you a "snap" of how it turned out.
I did leave hints of green paint on the piece as I have several restored antiques with that same effect in the house. Besides whatever they used initially on this bad-boy seeped into the grain and just would not leave!

Now I remember why I don't "strip" anymore...It was a real job to get all that old paint out of the carving, but I think it turned out really nice-Now to fill it with my vintage linen and quilts-

Posted - Aug 10 2012 : 7:54:24 PM If it had been pine I could understand it....but Oak?
My DH and I, early in our marriage, stripped a huge wooden icebox completely covered in cheap white paint. It took us months-When we put our first house up for sale it sat in the kitchen against the open stairs leading upstairs. Well...the people who eventually bought our house told their Realtor. We want the house and will pay full price if they include the oak icebox! We said sure! They no longer live there sadly the house went into foreclosure a few years back and I often wonder when they left did they take the ice-box with them?

Posted - Aug 10 2012 : 7:46:49 PM It is always wonderful to take something non-descript looking and turn it into a work of art. It looks gorgeous and I think worth the extra effort to get it stripped. Makes you wonder why somebody painted it in the first place.

Posted - Aug 10 2012 : 10:57:17 AM Bruce and I used to "strip" all the time LOL! Now I remember why I stopped doing it. What a job! But, I knew at auction that it was oak underneath all that paint and I had to have it. It smells wonderful by the way! I posted on an earlier thread about how to get rid of that darn old Moth Ball stink and you guys gave me really good remedies that WORKED! The chest has a warm golden oak glow (Danish oil) and it is sound as a dollar-Heirloom quality. I am pleased with it-It is HUGE over 4-feet 9 inches long-We think it is hand-made from an old bed frame because of slits in the legs where a metal frame of a bed would have slipped in. Whoever built though was over zealous with the nails! Used a lot....It truly is a one of a kind blanket chest.
