Posted - Sep 22 2012 : 7:18:25 PM It just doesn't take much to excite me, but I had a "duh" moment this afternoon and had to laugh. My hubby and I have been rendering tallow for the past two days, 20 lbs at a time and after I got the last batch strained, this afternoon, I realized that I didn't have to throw out all the fatty glop that is always left over. Soooo, I patted the glop into 5 square cake pans, 1" deep, and sprinkled bird seed over the surface and pressed it into the glop and then put them into our big cooler. Just a little while ago, I got the pans out and sliced the hardened fat into rectangles that fit our bird feeder and put them into ziploc bags to go into the freezer as suet for the birdfeeder this winter. "Duh" We used everything but the "moo"!!

Posted - Sep 24 2012 : 12:36:12 PM Oh gosh! what a great idea! it's getting that time of year when I start amping up the bird feeders and your "Duh moment" is way more cost effective then buying the store bought stuff. Koolieo!

Posted - Sep 23 2012 : 2:40:32 PM Well, you got me on this one. LOL!
As soon as I opened it up and saw the pan, I said to my hubby "Big Buzz" "I don't know what that is,but it sure looks yummy. Then I find out, it is for our fine feathered friends. Lucky Birds!
It looks like something with coconut (my favorite). I was getting all anxious to read the recipe. LOL! Guess the old eyes are not what they used to be. And to think I had catarac surgery 2 years ago. LOL!
Now I have to go search my cupboards and make something using coconut. Chirp! Chirp!..I mean, YUM YUM! LOL!

Posted - Sep 23 2012 : 06:05:33 AM Lorena, I use the tallow for making soap and am going to try my hand at making candles just for the heck of it. The tallow is an awesome base for castile goats milk soap. But there is always this gloppy mess left over when you render the fat into the tallow. I had just tossed it until I had my 'ah ha' moment yesterday! :-)

Posted - Sep 22 2012 : 7:22:59 PM Well, aren't you just a smarty britches? That is brilliant! I need to do that for my chickens. I don't hang any bird feeders because they would be cat food. Not fair to the poor little birds. But my chickens would love this. Great idea!
