Hey Farmgirls,
Thanksgiving is fast approaching and I am reminded of two days that we like to observe.

NEXT WEDNESDAY, November 21
: National Tie One On Day - the day we take a loaf of homemade bread, wrapped in an apron and deliver to someone who is in need of it, or to share or encourage, express friendship, whatever . . . a great tradition.

BLACK FRIDAY after THANKSGIVING: this is noted on Mary Jane's calender as "Buy Nothing Day". Works for me . . . I don't plan to try to go shopping.

Happy Thanksgiving to ALL of you farmgirls!
I know I'm thankful for many, many things, including YOU!

Delivered my bread and handmade apron . . . it was very much appreciated.
I won't even get into what we did today . . Black Friday. Certainly wasn't shopping but it was a stressful day!

I went shopping once on Black Friday. My daughter talked me into it and we left at like 5:00 AM with hot chocolate and donuts in the car. It was cold and strange, but fun because I was with her. However, I am letting go of a lot of my shopping habits. Keeping it simple nowadays. :) I got so much done last Sunday online! And shipping is cheap now.

Yay! Tie one one! The boys were just telling me how they wanted to do something like this on that day, only they had a totally different name for it. I thought it was cute...guess they are on to something awesome, right? :) Sounds like the ladies here will be doing some great things for their neighbors. :)

We will be spending Thanksgiving at our house in Bend, Oregon, and will be shopping on Black Friday but only the local merchants, not the malls or chain stores. Bend has a wonderful historic downtown area and we are happy to support the local shops there.

I'm not a black Friday shopper--never have been. And, with the invention of the internet, I almost never have to leave my desk to shop :)
Having worked retail as a 2nd job most of my life (and my poor mother racking up her 18th year of full time employment at Kohl's), I really detest the attitude of (most of) the people who shop on this day--largely, it's a lot of complaining and bickering over sale prices, door buster sales, rain checks etc...and they seem to have little concept of what "holiday spirit" actually means.

On the Wednesday before Thanksgiving, I have to work, but I will be making pies when I get home that night, so I will be "tieing one on" for sure.

I'm very MUCH a supporter of "Green Saturday" and WILL shop then. Our Farmers Market now has opportunity for vendors to sell in an indoor setting. We are vendors during the summer season, but aren't at this winter one yet. If we do participate it won't be until after the holidays. This is a first time effort so we hope it "flies".
HOWEVER, there is a local farm-to-table restaurant that has a Farm Store where you can purchase produce (some folks have greenhouses), eggs and meat . . all locally produced. And, there are the Christmas Craft fairs and bazaars where you can purchase handmade items from local artists. My hubby and I DO participate in a couple of those to sell our handmade items.

okay, the tie one on day ... I was in a way different direction! I am working on Black Friday, but even if I had it off I still would NOT shop on that day ...If I shop at all it is on small business Saturday ...
I do like the tie one on tradition!

The Saturday after Thanksgiving is also known as "Green Saturday". We have a bazaar where everything is either local and/or homemade. I don't shop on Black Friday.

I've got my apron all ready for the Tie One on Day. A special one for my elderly neighbor.

We do go shopping on Black Friday though. Our Fred Meyer's puts all their socks on sale for 50% off. It's the only time of year we get socks and we stock up for our boys. I think they are all currently down to about 3 pairs. We sometimes pick up a new game or toy so we'll spend the rest day of the day playing.

Phyllis . . I hear ya'! And I DO hope you have some sales. I totally understand that, as I'm a crafter myself, hoping to sell my wares.
So, I do wish you well.

I have had such fun in "Tie One On" day and it's such a joy to share in that way! I know what you mean, Lori, so many folks to choose from.
Wishing you all well!

I will be working on Black Friday- NO shopping for me...when I'm done with work a nap and then decorating the home. As for Tie One On- I have done that the past 3-4 years..I will try and work on an apron tonight and make bread next week..not sure to gift it to this year..so many people to choose from.
Love both of these days!!

I like the Tie One On Day. I'll try that one.
Thanks.

I will be one of those people out trying to sell my handmade wares on black Friday, so I hope that not everybody will heed that one. I realize that we all need to cut back here and there, but it's one of the few days that I look forward to selling something.

I have never gone shopping on Black Friday, the name alone sounds scary. Not to mention the day after Thanksgiving my house looks like there has been a terrible accident. Messy messy.
