I seem to have accidentally started a collection of old photos. Over the summer I bought a box at a garage sale that was packed with old photos. The last thing I need is another collection, but they are so neat. I love looking at them.
Here'one I especially like. The majority of the box were from the 1930s and early 40s, but this one is obviously older. I wonder who she is and who was taking the picture?

I'll join the swap too. Great suggestion. I've got plenty to choose from.
So true about the details you can find in the background. I find the same thing in old books. A romance novel from the 1930s, for instance, isn't trying to educate anyone on what life was like but you find little bits and pieces about meals, kitchens, clothes, and attitudes embedded in the weepy, melodramatic story.
Jonni, what you say about the early days of cameras reminds me of my very first antique photo find. Years ago when I was still in college I bought 5 or 6 pages from a photo album from 1908. Those people were having so much fun! There were pictures of picnics, parties, young men and women in their bathing suits lolling around on the beach together. Not at all prim and proper.
I wish there was a good way to scan photos from album pages. My printer just isn't big enough. |

I haven't hosted a swap before but I am willing to try. I will mark my calendar and post the swap early in January. Hope we get enough to participate.

I also collect old photographs, pick some up at antique stores and also have many family photos,my mother when she was a child and my grandmother. I would love to join this swap. The ones I pick up my husband thinks I am crazy but I use them in a lot of my paper art. Picked some up when we traveled out west and down south, cant believe someone did not cherish them enough to keep in the family. I wonder what will become of my family pictures if my children will keep them, now a days kids think like that are clutter, so my son in law tells me! |

I love and collect old photographs. I collect tintypes, daguerreotypes and ambrotypes. My favorite piece in my collection is an old family album that I was lucky to find that dates back to 1884. I love history and the photo's do take you back to a different place and time. You can learn so much about the clothing, hairstyles and such and I love when they are photographed with something that was meaningful to their lives. Such as somethng that they did for a living or a favorite doll for a child or something like that. I'm always looking for old photos and I'm always amazed at what I find.To me it's like holding a small piece of history in my hands.

She is lovely--looks like a Gibson girl with her hair in that style and the surrounding decor. Whenever I see photos like this, I always think of when people "first" got cameras. I imagine them taking photos of just about anything and everything--maybe this was taken by a sister, or a husband, even.
I love old photos, too--for me, the people in them are interesting, but what's more interesting to me is the background, especially if they are taken in a home or room. So many pictures were portraits taken in studios with backgrounds, but the old "snapshots" are much more candid and simple. Love to see all the furnishings!

It's hard for me to believe it too sometimes, Stephanie. Now that I've started looking for them at sales, I pick them up more often than you'd expect. Sometimes people who buy houses to flip or to rent will find boxes of old stuff hidden away in the attic, and sometimes family members are just overwhelmed when cleaning out an older person's house. I like to think that they keep the stuff that means the most to them and what they don't care about I shouldn't feel guilty about taking away. Like at this one sale, my husband bought all of the woman's great-grandfather's WWI papers and bits of military gear. She was just happy that someone wanted it. But I asked about a goofy plastic cup shaped like a cow, and we had to wait while the younger family members snapped pictures and checked in with someone out of town. Turned out, that was one of the family "treasures" they'd been searching for (needless to say, I had to put it back!) |

I also love old photos. I have a couple of lockets that I got at auction that have some really neat old pics in them. I have no idea who they are, but I just cant get rid of them. I cant believe that someone would let family photos go.
