My son is checking into an opening for a carpet cleaning service, and I am opening a store on zazzle.com. I am using my own photos for products people purchase, and get a percentage for purchases. I am waiting for the 24 hr period to end, and when my store is approved, I will share the link.
No calls since my son's interview, and he's applying at more places. However, we are down to one car to share, and something is hanging underneath it. Dh is working long days and cannot get daylight time to look under it.
My son got called yesterday, and has an interview today (Sunday). He's not one for conversation, so I am not sure where yet. His car would not start, so he took my jalopy. It makes me wonder, if he will need to borrow my car more often this winter. The weather is wet, wet, and wet. And foggy too.
Any tips for someone who hasn't worked for 14 years?
We need the cash right now. We can't afford Christmas gifts. Jobs are so hard to find, and it doesn't help when you live in the boonies and drive a jalopy. Plus, little dd has a birthday right before Christmas, and our anniversary is the day after.
Now that I think about it, I sure hope I can even find my old resume.
I don't like to leave this house empty, but I don't think I have a choice.
A few weeks ago, my oldest daughter's items were stolen by a cousin, while stored at her dad's house. The items were never returned, including her "sweet 16" bracelet that Mom bought her. I don't trust leaving the house empty due to these kids still living on drugs etc.
Anyway, I don't have cash to buy any new clothes, so I hope to get something where I can wear jeans or a skirt (I have a few that still fit).
Any tips from anyone who has gone back to work after many, many years would be appreciated.

I posted an update on the vehicle repairs (on the prayer forum), but in short the van's fan is working again (after hubby worked from 10am to 10pm last night with a family member.
The only bad part - the battery is no good. Batteries are not cheap, so I cringed when he told me this morning. We need a miracle. Hubby said I better pray I get a child support check before Christmas.
He told me that his employer is now (at the holidays) of all times for pete's sake, changing weekly pay to bi-weekly. He won't get paid next week. :(

Well I sure will pray about that too Kristina, I just know it is all going to work out for you all. It is just so hard to deal sometimes and this time of year just doesn't make it any better, but this is the season for Jesus and He is going to do something soon I really believe that.

Thanks Darlene. I have a family member who is also watching for county jobs for me. I'm checking area Universities and Colleges too. Hubby is still wanting me home, but we have 3 cars to repair and medical bills etc. Hopefully, we can sell the van once it's fixed and get something more suitable next year.

check with your unemployment office. Ours has classes on helping to make resumes. They might be able to refer you to someplace that will help you update your resume so that people will want to look at it and want to interview you. Maybe your son needs a new one or reword it some how, May be your son is over qualified for some of the jobs and he could leave something out of the resume so they don't look at it that way.

I am suddenly locked out of editing this thread for some reason.
I forgot to mention that I opened an "oops" store in our farm store. It's reduced items due to imperfections, mistakes, etc. I'll be loading a few more items later.

Kristina, Employers are not as polite as they used to be. No one seems to get back to the applicants after an interview anymore. It leaves you wondering. Hope he has better luck with the new applications!

So happy to hear that your son got a call. I hope that it works out for him and that he gets the job. Praying too that the car situation improves. Amazing how much we have to rely on our cars. I was saying that when we had the gas shortage here after superstorm Sandy. I made jokes (but was really serious) that if I had a horse and carriage I wouldnt have to worry about gas....LOL

My son has had classes to become a financial adviser. He has since decided to go into another field. But where I am going with this is he used to do professional resumes for people. It seems it helps a lot these days to have one done. I cant even tell you who one would contact to have one done. Maybe online? Maybe one of the other ladies knows. It is said to give people a big advantage. My son did one for my LD daughter and it was no time before she was hired at walmart.

Thank you all for your ideas. I may be e-mailing some of you. My son is applying like crazy, but no interviews.
16 post offices in our county area are reducing their hours due to cut backs etc. Those people may be scrambling for part time work soon too.

Have you considered looking at something you can do from home with a high-speed internet connection and a phone? For example, some catalog companies have sophisticated phone routing software so that when a customer calls their 800-number to make an order, it switches to the next available order-taker... and that person doesn't necessarily have to work at the call center these days.

I pary that you can find something that works for you as far as schedule/pay etc. It is definately difficult to be out of the workforce for a number of years- we tend to underestimate ourselves and think that we dont have what it takes anymore- meanwhile running the household and raising chilren is probably the most difficult job we will ever hold down! LOL
Please keep us posted- as others said at least right not there may be alot of places hiring for seasonal help- and I'm sure once they see what a hard worker you are they may just end up "keeping" you!

In our area we are always looking for substitute teachers. Each state has different requirements, so you would have to check it out. I recently applied for another job and spent some time on the internet researching interviewing skills. I kept hearing this buzz word "team player". I thought I understood what it meant, but since I kept hearing it I decided to check out the meaning in case I was missing something. Come to find out it is simply a good work ethic.

I've been working at our local elementary school for almost 5 years now. It's only 2 hours a day, but it really helps with expenses. I also do merchandising - email me if you'd like more information. Very flexible work for a reputable company.
I listed my past work experiences as well as my volunteer time as a Girl Scout leader and Sunday school teacher. Everything counts!

Kristine, I would still list your last 3 places of employment and what skills you used at those jobs. Since you have not been in the workforce lately, be sure to add that you have computer skills and list any specific areas that you are competent at such as email, excel, micorsoft word, etc. Most work places use computers so you want them to know you are familiar with using one. Be sure to list any volunteer jobs you have had over the past few years and what you did in those volunteer roles. Also add any roles such as Girl Scout Leader, 4H Leader or other leadership roles and dates that you did them. Keep your resume to one page with succinct information and be sure to list at least two references as all employers will call at least one reference. They can be personal friends or someone you worked with as a volunteer.

If there are some larger type stores like Home Depot or Lowes or Target or Walmart, they may be hiring seasonal workers and have openings. If there are stores near by, you can go online to see what jobs are open and apply. Most businesses require online applications these days so you can start from your computer at home to see what might be open. The larger stores are going to be your best bet for a quick hire . Be prepared to work weekends and evenings as these are most likely the positions that are most often open.
