If you are dairy product consumers, you might be interested in knowing about this, and maybe even commenting about it. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is announcing that the International Dairy Foods Association (IDFA) and the National Milk Producers Federation (NMPF) have filed a petition asking the FDA to change the standard identity of milk products so that artificial sweeteners can be used in them without having to be mentioned on the milk products' packaging. The sweeteners they are wanting to use without saying they are using them are things like aspartame and sucralose. The IDFA and the NMPF claim that, if they can use these artificial sweeteners without listing them in their products, it will lessen the problem of obesity in children. The problem with that is that studies have been done at Yale that suggest that, in fact, such artificial sweeteners may actually increase the problem of obesity and of type 2 diabetes.

The short version of this is: the dairy industry wants to put artificial sweeteners in dairy products without the public knowing that they are doing it. They don't want the sweetener they've used to appear on the list of ingredients on dairy products.

The products to be affected are these: acidified milk, cultured milk, sweetened condensed milk, nonfat dry milk, nonfat dry milk fortified with vitamins A and D, evaporated milk, dry cream, heavy cream, light cream, light whipping cream, sour cream, acidified sour cream, eggnog, half-and-half, yogurt, lowfat yogurt, nonfat yogurt and flavored milk.

If you would like to comment on this petition to the FDA, you can do so here.http://www.regulations.gov/#!submitComment;D=FDA-2009-P-0147-0012. Personally, I believe we all have a right to know what is in the foods we eat and the beverages we drink and give to our children. I don't trust the desire for secrecy. I'm going to write a comment.

I had heard about this too.
They use the example of how it will benefit school age children?? What? I was always told to keep children away from artificial sweeteners.
No labeling is what gets me too!

This proposal deeply worries me. I have a horrible reaction to artificial sweeteners. I worry that my kids might have the same reaction. I stay away from these chemicals and without it labeled I would be in huge trouble. I just don't understand how the government can even consider something like this being ok...

You have to take the raw milk thing slow & steady, too much will hit your gut hard to start, kind of like eating a really good fermented sauerkraut raw, before your body is used to it. The probiotics in those foods are so plentiful; they take some getting used to. The first time I made my sauerkraut in my cool new crock, I ate it with zeal..I learned my lesson!

This is just wrong. There are serious health issues associated with artificial sweetners. I really do not drink milk much anymore. It does not like me anyway. I usually use almond milk, but my husband still drinks it. He says that he will surely not be drinking it anymore if they do this!

The link that Nini provided is good. Please read the document. I noticed that there is a comment button near the top of the page.

Just FYI - I couldn't access this document by doing a search on the FDA website (could be a computer issue on my end???), but was able to access it by doing an online search. Here's the link: http://www.regulations.gov/#!documentDetail;D=FDA-2009-P-0147-0012

My husband can't believe they would even consider something like this. Thank you so much for informing us, Tracy.

Me, too, Tara - I have an autoimmune disease that is aggravated by non-organic meat or milk products - when I do consume them, the pain is sheer misery. I am very careful about what goes into and on our bodies as a whole, but if they start putting this kind of junk in food products and not labeling them accordingly, this could mean big trouble for me, not only with pain. It messes up my whole system. This is just so disturbing to me. It's funny, though, because I recently noticed that the organic milk we usually buy is starting to have that "hard" chemical-ly taste to it, and I have been having more problems lately... I wonder if they've done something to their milk? I am going to have to investigate. I had started to try to acclimate myself to organic raw milk; although I loved it, I was having such a hard time with it... I think I may have to try again and just stick with it this time. This news is just terribly disconcerting to me.

Tracy - do you know where I can read up on this document? I would really like to read it.

Thanks so much -

Nini

I agree this is dangerous. I don't drink cow's milk and only eat organic dairy. I have an auto-immune disease and find it very hard to find affordable, healthy food. I will have a flare up of fibro pain if I eat non organic meat. So much of our grain, corn, soy ect is gmo and no wonder we are all sick. Back to basics and buy food from local farmer's you can trust.
Also soy lecithin is in 98% of everything. It's a waste product of solvents and pesticides. yuck!

Oh my, I just went back to the linked site and just like you said, the document is not posted. I was able to comment this morning. I wonder if wnough of us put up a fuss to make them take it down?
I wonder if we can still contact the FDA and reference Document ID FDA-2009-p-0147-0012

This is absolutely outrageous... And I just went to leave a comment and the page on your link says that the page no longer exists or has moved. Unbelievable.

You know, without going into detail, artificial sweeteners as well as other chemical additives have a serious adverse affect on my health, and I have to be very careful about reading labels before consuming foods - or using ANY type of product, really. I RELY on that information! How dare ANYONE put ANYTHING into food we purchase without providing that information on the label! And I can't believe they would put artificial sweeteners in milk! WHAT?!?!?!? Is that something they have already been doing? Oh my... (You would think with all the "free" candy some of the farmers are feeding cows nowadays, the last thing they'd need is to add a sweetening agent of any kind! I'm interested to see what kind of problems THAT causes, too!)

This is completely irresponsible and could be extremely dangerous. I just can't get over it. 'Just one more reason to stay with the basics from sources you know you can rely on, and to go for whole, unprocessed foods.
