Hi girls,
I rode a horse yesterday for the first time in probably 40 years and I loved it. Tanner was given to a rescue ranch because he is 23 and too old for some activities but I tell you he was great on the trail and was totally enjoying it, like I was. I even gave him a bath afterward.

I am going to "lease" him (new term to me) on a monthly basis and then I can go ride him once or twice a week depending on the agreement I choose. The ranch provides tack, feed and takes care of his other health needs. All I have to do is show up and ride. Yahoo!!

Thanks Bonnie and Laura.
Poor Tanner was tired when I rode him Monday. Spring Break brought in lots of people who wanted to ride.
I may shift my riding day to Wednesday so he can recuperate from the weekends.

Laura,
Here is the website for Susie Q's Ranch. She will talk to you and explain her lease agreement, which is a one-page simple release of liability.

No, I think I do have it in a scrapbook somewhere. I entered it in a contest with Horse.com catalog a couple of years ago, for a cover shot but never heard anything. I think they chose a pic of John Lyons with his horse for it.

Laura,
The snow picture would make a great Christmas card. I hope you have it blown up and framed somewhere.

I'm sure the horse you are riding is safe and would probably be able to lope some. Hunny was ridden up to 2 yrs ago. Below is a pic of her being ridden by a dear friend of mine in 2011. This was the last time she was ridden. Hunny has a funny shaped backbone and it was starting to cause her pain to be ridden with the aging and all. Otherwise I would have probably ridden her a little longer because it helps to keep them in shape. She is just too unsteady on her poor old legs now anyway. The other pic of her below was taken in 2007. It's one of my favorite horse pics.

Oh Laura,
Isn't she a sweetie. The horse I ride is 23 and was owned by a local family whose kids had outgrown him. They gave him to Susie Q's Ranch where I ride. She takes in horses that are retired or unwanted. We actually ran into the previous owners on the trail and Tanner recognized them. He does stumble a little when going downhill on the rocky trails but loves to speed it up going uphill. I don't have the need to canter or run him and he is happy with that. I will take a picture when I see him Monday.
Thanks,
Terri

They both sound like a pretty good deal. I charge $60 for a riding lesson or a trail ride or $80 if we trailer to another local location. They can last as long as I get home by dark. Most people don't want to ride more than 2 hrs. I don't let folks take the horses out without us there with them but I might consider it with some of my students later. The problem is so many people want to run the horses too much so it would have to be someone I could really trust with my horse's safety and well being. Our terrain can be rough too and people need to know what to not get the horses into. But with an older horse and someone like Terri it would be a good deal for the horse cause they could earn their keep even when they are older. You are giving me ideas Terri. I only have one old horse and she is very ancient and in retirement. Old horses can stumble and fall over with people. I doubt your horse is that old Terri. They all start to stumble a little when they get older but my old girl Hunny might just fall over with someone. And she is a big girl. It wouldnt be pleasant for her or the rider. She is coming 26 this year which isn't real old for some horses but for her it seems to be. Makes me sad to see her get old. Below is a pic of her.

Erin,
The lease deal is $100 a month to ride once a week for about 2 hours. You can also pay $150 and ride two times a week, but I don't know if I want to do that.
I am going to take a riding lesson I signed up for before I heard about leasing. That will cost $56 for one one-hour lesson. So I did the math and the leasing is a much better deal.
The website is www.equinenow.com and maybe they have horses in your area too.

I guess I never knew you could "lease" a horse. My life is WAY to busy to fit that in right now, but I just might keep it in mind. I'm in MD, and we have lots of horses around. Just how much do you pay to LEASE and for how long? I took a few English lessons when I was a teen. Loved it, but really don't have the desire to take lessons again. I would find it very theraputic to just go for a quiet ride in the woods.... and probably cheaper than a shrink!

Hahaha well actually he is. I don't really know him well enough to talk to him about his personal life though. I'm mostly just keeping a close eye on him right now since we are riding out in the woods alone. I really prefer to teach women and children. I will keep you in mind though if he shares that he would like to find love again. :)

Hahaha so fun. Terri did you know that one can show Breyer horses. It's cute and very interesting. I have to share something. I do riding lessons and trail rides for people and it is so wonderful when someone comes to us and rides and overcomes a fear issue or just always wanted to ride and never did get the chance. My current student is a 61 yr old man who hadn't been on a horse since he was 14 and even then just minimal. But it was something that he kept in his heart all these years and at his first lesson he was apprehensive but then took a deep breath and got on. For about 5 minutes he just sat on the horse as tears of joy and emotion rolled down his cheeks. Now and even that same day he was riding on the ranch and just doing so well. He has come twice now and next week I am going to have to talk to him about trail etiquette about slowing up and waiting for the other riders....lol. I just haven't had the heart to so far because he is having so much fun. It's great. I love my job! And my horses are so sweet and such a blessing to me and others. The outside of the horse is good for the inside of the man or woman...lol.

I guess I am horse bitten. I bought a fuzzy halter, toy truck and horse trailer and of course a Breyer horse statue.
I must be 12 years old again.

Terri, that sounds like alot of fun. I have only been on a horse a few times in my life, but I liked it when I did it. What a nice experience.

Thanks for your kind words, Laura and Deborah.
Believe it or not I am missing that horse because I don't go to ride him again until Monday. I may change that and arrange to ride him Monday and Wednesday. I can give up eating.....

You really are being a big blessing to them. I have people that want to do work to ride my horses but they are usually kids and I have to be out there to supervise the work and help them saddle anyway. It's easier to do the work myself...lol. It is a real treasure to find someone to pay to ride and doesnt need to be supervised. I only have 3 horses and 1 upcoming 2 yr old that are for customers right now anyway. And they do enough work. 2 of them are coming 18 so I will be happy when we can get the 2 yr old going then it will be less work for everybody. We also have a 4 yr old greenbroke gelding and another 2 yr old filly but the gelding is for sale cause I run mares pretty exclusively. And the other 2 yr old filly has top racing bloodlines. So she might be too much horse for a customer. But maybe not. She is for sale too just because I am reducing the herd a little. We will see at the end of this summer. Really is such a perfect setup for them to have you cause then you will ride her gently and she wont get bored and can still support herself. Just fabulous!

Thank you Tina, Marianne and Laura.
I was surprised this option was even available. I feel like I am helping the ranch also by giving exercise to these horses. They are rented on the weekend but no exercise during the week so we are all blessed.

Oh how fun for you Terri. I am so happy for you. He sounds fabulous and you don't have to commit to ownership. And Tanner gets to earn his keep. Yay! I will be hoping for pics and updates. I'm glad you took this step and did this for yourself. Horses bless us in so many ways.
