I was going to ask, but no, I DON'T think it is just me! I am SO tired and especially offended of the terms "going south" or "went south" to refer to something bad or not going as planned or not going as it should, etc.

As an example, "contract negotiations are going south; no one expects an agreement to be made". "Unfortunately, their relationship went south; there is no hope". Get the idea?? It is heard on national and local TV all the time!!! It can be heard in everyday conversation!!

Where did this start and why?? Everyone needs to go South at least once in their lives. It is a wonderful experience! I was born here in the South (with a capital "S") and don't plan to live anywhere else! I've been fortunate to visit several of our 50 states and North Carolina is a wonderful Southern state! Try visiting us here in "the South"!

Why don't people say, "the plan went NORTH"? or for that matter, East or West? When something goes wrong, why not say (as we PROUDLY do here in the South) say, "it went to hell in a hand basket"???!!!

Urgh!!!!!

I agree the phase "to hell in a handbasket" is great.

I always looked at it as NOT attacking the "south" just meaning something going down, not wrong or bad, just not right.
North up ... south down ... they use it like a compass ... south being down

I think the expression is just a way of saying downward -- to most of the country, the south is down.

I also wonder why that phrase is used. I grew up in the South. I love the South! I live in Louisiana, but will soon be moving to another Southern State, Texas.

Exactly! So I'll let that change start with me! No need to make references to any particular things, any particular place, etc. just to say something went or is not going well!

Let's leave the "goin' South" and other places just for vacations.

Peace,
Darlene

Darlene,

I grew up in the South also. I have been North Carolina and do agree that it is one beautiful state. Like you I have been in 27 of our states and the truth be told each state has it's own beauty. So maybe we should start a new trend whenever we hear the phrase gone South we change to "Hell in a Hand Basket" or some other phase that suits the situation. It starts with just one person to make changes. So we need to be the change for one thing to go away and a new phrase to replace it.
