Darling and I were out and about in a neighboring county today when I heard on the Seattle news about a bad accident in my town. Came home and had DS show me a pic he'd taken with his cell phone; an upside down, very smashed car.
Turns out a couple cars being driven by teens were racing down the absolute busiest road in the county, right where traffic gets really snarly and congested. Estimated speeds of 80-100 mph, zipping in and out of traffic, on the shoulder of the road...and head on into an oncoming pickup.
One death...a 63 yo passenger of the pickup...and all for a race by two little punks.
Such a horrible thing, to hope that they go to their graves with that man on their minds...knowing that they ripped the life out of a man who was probably a husband, father, grandfather... Wrong of me, I know, but that's what I'm feeling at the moment. It'll pass, of course, and I'll pity them.
It happened right in front of Costco; two spits from Walmart, and a breath away from the already deadliest corner in the county. Anyone could have been killed by those boys. All I keep thinking is 'it could have been any member of my family driving down that road'...and in fact, it very nearly was.

we just had the same thing happen here just a couple of wks. ago w/ teens. A woman driving a transport bus w/ a child inside lost her life, the teens lost theirs & the child is still holding on. Its so sad.

My thoughts and prayers go out to the man who died and his family. A senseless tragedy.

On a more hopeful note, I knew a man who was involved in a similar accident (on drugs, racing, killed someone accidentally). He went to jail, and when he got out he turned his life around completely. He's a minister now and has done quite a lot of good in the world. Not to excuse these kids who killed the driver in Seattle, but there is still hope for them in their future lives. Something good may come of it. |

The egocentric nihilism of some young people today is tragic. It's like they think life is a video game with unlimited do-overs. Guess what.

Every year we have a story like this, and usually the innocent people are the ones who die. About a month ago 4 teenage boys drove away at high speeds from a high school south of here and hit a 63 year old grandmother who was driving a school van, head on. They All died but what seemed so strange to me is that the media kept mentionimg the boys and their funerals, what about the woman they killed? I realize it is sad to see young lives cut so short, but why are others made to suffer the poor judgement and irresponsibility of others as though they played a part in these tragic events. And with that said I will also say I am terrified of the day my son starts driving....

Oh, I'm sure they'll remember it, Karin. I would imagine the look on the faces of those in the truck will be etched in their minds forever.
I guess stupid is called stupid for a reason...I'd been thinking 'why on the worst road in town?'...but at speeds like that, it's obvious that good judgement on where to speed and race isn't going to be a priority, eh?
A girl my son went to school with died in a car with her boyfriend a couple years ago. They were doing 80. I've always wondered if she were drunk like he'd been...if she knew she was getting into a car with someone who wasn't safe to drive with...
But golly, the boys yesterday weren't even drinking; they were sober!

I hate to hear things like this. I hope that they will remember this for a long time and that it will cause them to direct their lives in a better direction. There was an accident near us a few years ago, where a man was crossing the street from collecting his mail and was hit and killed by someone speeding. The worst part about it was that the driver kept asking if he had to stay because he had a meeting to get to. Talk about lack of respect for another's life! People never cease to amaze me. :(

I always think of how blessed I was that something stupid like that didn't happen to me and my friends when we were teenagers. I don't think we ever raced like that, but I am sure we didn't always make the best choices. You just wish sometimes you could impose some of the wisdom we gain with age on our youth!

How terrible!! That happens alot everywhere, the need for speed kills. There was a fatal accident in front of our house a few years ago on Fathers day, a young man was high, coming home early morning and sped arcoss the center line hitting and killing a elderly couple, just horrible. Their crosses remain there and I try to bring flowers every Fathers day.

Tragic. Things like that just make me sick - just so sad for both the family and friends of the man killed, as well as for the youngsters who will live with it. Just so sad for all...
