good evening gurlfrenz! we just got home! spent a few days in amsterdam .. then flew into toledo for a few days with the grandes! am now sitting in this COLD computer cabin and saying my 'howdies' to all the gurlfrenz! what a fun time we did have .. i took OVER a THOUSAND photos!!! will have to download them to my computer .. and pick and choose some to go with my 'stories' .. i won't be able to post them here .. cuz' it would take me FOREVER .. soooo .. if you wanna' see the pics that go with the stories (will post a few of those here .. but ALL to my 'gurlfrenz' list .. soooo .. ef'fen you wanna' hear all the adventures and see the pics .. be sure to e-mail me and ask to be on my 'true friends' list .. and BE SURE to include both your FIRST and LAST name and your e-mail address!
gonna' go unpack now .. but will try and start some stories tomorrow!

Frannie, it's very good to have you back with us! You are sorely missed when you're gone! My heart breaks for the little Massai girl children... I've heard about that practice. Big bummer. I look forward to lots of tales of Africa.

rhonda . i would love to hear what the missionaries were able to accomplish with the massai .. the ones we met .. we were told that they believe in "god" .. but NOT an afterlife. oh lordy! did the missionaries tell you what they do with their dead?
i think i found that to be more shocking than anything i learned in africa. (shocking by american beliefs .. but surely i did not have a 'judgement' of them .. just a profound "oh my GOSH!!!") xo

Hey Frannie...it's soooooooooo good to have you back "home"! Even my husband has been missing you-he asked just yesterday "How come I haven't heard any good Frannie stories lately?" I HAD told him you were in Africa, but he had forgotten.
We have friends who were missionaries among the Massai for many years...it's truly another world. Get some rest & then pull up a chair & tell us some stories! Looking forward to it!

thanks for all the sweet words gurlfrenz! jus' a couple little notes from things you kids sed .. reminded me of some things we learned:
we visited one of the places where Out of Africa was filmed. we were in a skinny canoe .. hippo hopping! my daughter was alarmed when i told her that because i had forgotten that she told us to NOT get in the water with hippos. hippos kill more humans than any other african animal (so we were told) .. because they come up under boats (accidentally) and tip them over .. many fisherman die this way. they aren't out to KILL you .. and they don't EAT you .. but they WILL SNAP YOU IN HALF! We were by a pod of about 25 of them. and then went into the 'reeds' where they hide .. this was probably NOT a good idea! the amazing thing about that boat ride was that we went by a bank with over a hundred women and small children WASHING CLOTHES in the muddy water. there are CROCODILES that lurk beneath the surface and will occasionally snap up a momma or child! it is just amazing what different cultures learn to live with.
Massai ... oh my ... we saw quite a lot of this tribe in their beautiful clothing (tablecloths! ... i bought FOUR!) they wear RED in honor of the BLOOD that an animal takes when it kills ... and to ward wild animals off. they walk among them when they tend their cattle .. even small boyos .. and speaking of their cattle .. as part of TRAVEL LEARNS' safari experience, they have different 'speakers' talk to us all along our trip. and on two different occasions a Massai Warrior spoke to us .. one of them told us that ALL the cattle in the WORLD belong to THEM! (ha! he even said .. and NOT in a funny tone!! .. that all the cattle in america belongs to them and we should send them to them in africa! they believe that God sent them to them from a rope from heaven .. (jenny .. guess you're gonna' have to pack up miz mona and send her along!) they STEAL cows .. but they do not see it as 'stealing' since they all belong to them! AND .. their diet consists of only (well, mostly only .. that is another story!!!) COWS BLOOD mixed with COWS MILK. I believe the men will eat cow's meat .. but NEVER is a female to witness it! oh .. and a wife costs TEN COWS!!! i have never seen more PRIMITIVE living than the massai tribes. oh lordy! wait t'il you see the photos. i actually had to leave and beat a retreat back to the van .. we were ankle deep in cow POO .. they keep their cattle in the CENTER of their small village of mud/dung/huts where they LIVE at night ... to keep lions and leopards from killing them! i have never ever ever ever been among so many flies! i couldn't bear to be among the children who's mouths were covered with flies. (our guide told us he purposely did not take us there in the morning when they first get up because their eyes are all runny and also filled with flies! now THAT was educational! i took lots of photos (they let you after you pay your $20. to visit their village. so many stories to tell .. little girls are circumcised (oh YES!!) at about ten years old .. boys are circumcised from about 14 to 20 .. and if they even let out a 'peep' .. they have to leave the village for two years.
NOW .. these are the 'facts' as they were told to us by the massai we visited .. and by our guide .. who knows them well.
i will never ever forget this african experience. i kept a very full journal and hope to pull it somewhat together within the next couple weeks. will be sending 'chapters' out with photos once i have it together.
i have been through three time zones during the last month and still don't know which one i am in at any given time .. but i think it is the 'sleep' one right now. good night sweet princesses .. i will try and catch up on all the good gossip soon .. but have to prepare for a 'tea party' which is upcoming next week! xo, frannie

Welcome home, Frannie. I am sure glad you had a great time, and thankfully you made it home safe and sound.
I just re-watched "Out of Africa" and it was so good, again. The breathtaking scenery is why that movie is so good! I hope to see the highlands of Africa once in my life.
Coincidentally I watched a documentary last night "Holy Cow" about the cow and the effect it has had on the human race, they profiled the Moussoui (sp?) the tribe in Africa that depends on the cow. The tribe was so appreciative and loving of thier animal friends...it made me think, that with all of our riches and possesions, we really could learn alot from the "primitive" tribal people.
WEll, as you see I am on an Africa theme just now, So I will be waiting for your stories and photos.
