Posted - Mar 13 2007 : 12:42:16 PM I dreamed of so many things... I wanted to be a farmer of some sort- growing vegetable and flowers, having rabbits, 2 dogs, several cats and a barn
I wanted to wear overalls and flip flops (yes- I would not be a conventional farmer) and buy an old beater truck to drive around in.
I wanted long hours to read and cross stitch, walk, swim and bike...
Simple little house with really comfortable furniture. (Don't know where that came from.. )
If I had to have a traditional career, I would be a medical secretary. They were always nice and friendly when we went to the office for an appointment.
I would have loved to live right next to the ocean and do all this but never have seen a farm next to one. But I still dream!!!!
Funny thing is, I am a lot of these things now and am headed for more of them....goes to show I think we all really know what we want to do but life distracts us. |

Posted - Mar 15 2007 : 8:23:13 PM When I was little, I had my heart set on being a veterinarian. At the time, I loved school and got excited when I found out how much college being a vet required. I was also really into nature and wanted to be a scientist. I also thought it would be neat to work at Disney World! When jr. high came along, I got into music. I played clarinet and sang in the choir. In 6th or 7th grade, my friend and I sent a tape to a record company and were turned down. I'd love to listen to that tape now! When I started high school, I lost all my ambition and started becoming depressed. I also had a hard time in social situations. I left public school in the middle of my freshman year to be homeschooled. I was a lot happier, but during the summer before my senior year, I became severely depressed. Things like getting a job or going to college, or even having a boyfriend seemed impossible. But I got the help I needed and got better. I slowly started getting my dreams back. I attempted college classes, joined choirs, and made friends. It's been almost four years since that terrible experience and life is good. I met the man of my dreams and we're getting married in June 2008. College didn't work out, but I think I'm going to try it again. I'm planning on getting my GED this spring since I didn't keep very good records during high school. I'm still not exactly sure what I want to be, but I have some ideas! Vet tech, outdoor/environmental education, environmental science, herbalist, sustainable agriculture, horticulture, and the list goes on! More than anything, I want to own a little piece of land in the country, be a wife and mother, and tend to a few animals and fields. I can't wait to see what the future throws my way!
Happy dreaming, Laura

Posted - Mar 15 2007 : 6:57:29 PM I wanted to be a secretary from the time I was 7 years old. In high school I took as many business classes as I could and loved it. That's what I've done my whole life except now it's not PC to be called a secretary -- it's admin assistant. I love business and that's the first section I grab out of the paper on Sunday. Also read as many business magazines as I can. For many years I wanted to be a "career woman". A couple of years ago I discovered that what I really wanted was to have a more simple life and really didn't want a "career". Now I'm happy to be a wife, mom, and homemaker who has a 3 day a week job doing bookkeeping. Just enough to keep my mind working, gets me out of the house, and gives me spending money. The rest of the time I'm happy to be at home nesting.

Posted - Mar 15 2007 : 4:12:55 PM When I was little I wanted to be a vet and own a farm with a horse. But when I got to high school I ran around with a bad crowd and got into tons of trouble. By then I love doing hair. I would do my friends hair and makeup all the time. I got my GED and went to hair school. I worked as a hair stylist for 17 years then I decided I wanted a change and tried retail management. I got promoted a few time now I am in charge of 120 Pharmacist and all their schedules and payroll. I am kinda like a stressed out admin. I hate my job but my body was giving out for standing on my feet all day and I would have required surgery on my shoulder to continue the pace I was going. I would love to stay home and work on the farm all day but it just isn't in our budget. Even though I never was able to go to school to be a vet. I have tons of Chickens and my wonderful cows. I learn things new every day. I just learned how to garden two years ago and I love it. I still want to get the horse though. Alicia

Posted - Mar 15 2007 : 3:02:52 PM I love this thread!! Most of all I wanted to be wife and a stay-at-home a mom and live somewhere in the country in a really old farmhouse that I would restore. I also aspired to be Jane Goodall (gray ponytail and all), a Jim Henson puppeteer, a National Geographic photographer, a librarian, and a postal carrier. LOL Well I got my biggest wish and have a beautiful son and get to stay at home. I don't live in the country, but I do have a fairly large yard. And my house isn't that old (although circa 1962 is much older than most of my friends' homes), and restoring is far too glamorous a term for the never-ending list of repairs/renovations. But it is an awesome turn-out. I'm truly blessed! |

Posted - Mar 14 2007 : 12:58:11 PM When I came into my teens was when there were alot of hippies and communes and I do remember thinking that I would like to live that life which I guess isn't much different than what I want in my life now... The simple life and all that went with it except that instead of alot of women doing my work it's just me! Cheryl

Posted - Mar 14 2007 : 12:36:36 PM My list is really long: Librarian, Laura Ingalls, a missionary to Kentucky, a vet, a teacher, a nurse, a mom, a wife, a homemaker, interior decorator, secretary, waitress, writer, own a craft/quilt/sewing shop.
Guess I've achieved a few of those, I waitressed my way through high school, work as our church secretary, and I'm a wife and mother, and I tell myself I'll achieve the teacher part with my children. I don't own a shop but I do a lot of sewing! And I'm on a first name basis with every librarian at our local library due to my frequent (2-3 times per week) visits! |

Posted - Mar 14 2007 : 10:49:35 AM I always just wanted to be a Mom. I've been other things too and have found that I had more dreams than I had thought I would but the main thing was to be a Mom. My first baby was premature and died when he was 2 weeks old and would have been 36yrs old the end of this month, can't believe it, I just don't feel that old. I had my 2nd son when I was 20 and have raised children ever since. I'm 53 now and my youngest is 13. It's interesting that so many of you did end up doing what you dreamed of doing as a child. I'm living the life I guess I always dreamed of, just never realized it if that makes any sense. Living in a log house on 10 acres, raising my kids, raising chickens, learning as I go along about sewing, canning, planning a garden.... I'd have to say I'm pretty blessed! Cheryl

Posted - Mar 14 2007 : 10:01:25 AM My mom always teases me about this . . . when I was real little I used to say I wanted to live in a trailer house and be a restaurant lady! LOL! I had visions of being poor white trash! I did actually waitress for several years during college days and we own a 5th wheel, so I guess I came close! LOL! But most of my growing up years was spent wanting to be an artist. I was sure I would be a female version of Norman Rockwell, whom I idolized. But, life happens and dreams don't always go as planned. But now with my antique show and creative friends, I am beginning to see the spark towards creating return. I miss it terribly and could just kick myself sometimes for letting go of my dream. But truly my antique show does help fill that void and it is very creative in its own way.
Hugs and blessings!
Brenda

Posted - Mar 14 2007 : 08:04:59 AM I have always wanted to be a forester. I wanted to know how things grow and why certain growing things become extinct. I will will have a double BS Business/Environmental Science and a AS in forestry in May of 2008. Yeah for me. And I wanted to be a wife and a mother. I am the mother of 2 girls and 2 boys and have a step daughter and step son that lives with us to. So I have just about gotten all that I wanted to in life.

Posted - Mar 14 2007 : 06:20:00 AM These are all so wonderful, however, Marybeth, your's is just adorable--a hermit? Great!
Let's see--I wanted to be a jockey--like my dad. I was born on a horsefarm, raised on the backside of the racetrack and it just made sense, except to my father, who said it was "no place for a girl, especially one as pretty as you. And especially my daughter." He felt the life was just too hard--I guess I believed him because he'd lived it.
So, after THAT, because I'd always loved animals of every shape and size, and really loved reading James Herriot (still do), I wanted to be a large animal vet, but the qualifier was that it had to be in England.
My mom and dad had other plans--since I was decidedly tom-boy, they enrolled me in ballet class, which apparently "took" because I became a professional classical ballerina, danced for 14 years in New York and England, until I became injured and could no longer dance. I guess I got my "large animal" experience with dancing, too--while living in England I worked on a friends dairy farm when I wasn't in performances, so I was able to have the best of both worlds--pointe shoes, wellies and kissing cow noses.
Now, I work as a paralegal, garden at my little cottage, eat LOTS that I couldn't before when I was dancing, and live happily ever after. Certainly different from what I set out to do, but enjoyable and my life just the same.

Posted - Mar 13 2007 : 10:48:06 PM First, What a NEAT topic!! Thank you for starting it! I have enjoyed reading everyones response so much!
For me, I told everyone when I was four that I was going to have two boys and two girls and some of them would be twins, be a missionary nurse and marry a wonderful man. They all laughed and thought I was too cute but I did go to nursing school (had to drop out 3 classes before my RN due to health, but I plan to go back again and get my RN! I LOVED it!), I was a missionary, and I do have two boys and two girls and the girls are twins sooo I didnt do to bad! Also my first attempt at a husband did not work but the second one seems to be a keeper thank goodness for that!
Of course as I travel and see more in life I have grown more interests and more dreams have grown. I want to travel the world, write, get my degree in nursing, interior design, special ed, and Home Ec, reopen my store, own a few other bussinesses, have my farmette (this is a must have for me!), and learn and expierence all I can! I don't know if I will fullfill all my dreams, but dreams are so important to me because they give reason and wings to my life. So weather they just help me live my life to its fulest and put smiles on my face, or if they actually all come true so I can fashion new ones, it does not matter to me, either way I will always dream and live! And on day when I am all grown up (around 120 or so) you all can ask me if I got to be what I wanted to be when I grew up!
Here is to all dreams and goals that are good comming true for us all!
Hugz! Talitha

Posted - Mar 13 2007 : 6:52:31 PM What I wanted more than anything was to be a wife and mother.....and have a horse. Well, I raised two beautiful children...who are now discovering their own dreams. My husband is my most precious friend. Now at age (almost) 50 I have a horse and a farm and I bake apple pies with my own home-picked apples, and blueberry buckle with my own blueberries and for breakfast I can eat eggs from the chickens that we have raised from peeps......life is wonderful!

Posted - Mar 13 2007 : 5:23:38 PM For a long time, I wanted to be a surgeon. Then I switched majors in college (to English Literature!), graduated and dabbled in several different jobs, including a stint teaching English in South America (after getting my master's), and am now an English teacher and writer (for myself more than anything). It's funny where life takes you... |

Posted - Mar 13 2007 : 5:09:00 PM I wanted to be an artist. I used to draw all of the time. My life has taken many twists and distractions but in a lot of ways, I still achieved my initial goal. Now I create with cakes, food, retail merchandise, through writing and crafts. Its all how you look at it, I guess.

Posted - Mar 13 2007 : 5:00:44 PM You guys have such uplifting ideals.....When I was little I wanted to be a hermit and live in a cabin in the wood. I had to have a fireplace too. All I figured I need was a horse, a dog and one wall of the cabin made into bookshelves and full of books. After I discoverd boys my tune changed a little....I married raised four beautiful daughters, always had a horse and dog and now I live almost in the wood and take care of a cranky old man. It almost worked. MB

Posted - Mar 13 2007 : 4:47:22 PM I wanted to be a nurse and a mother when I was younger. I was a certified nurses assistant in high school and went to nursing school for awhile but due to life circumstances had to drop out. Now I wish I could be a counselor.........I just havent got the nerve or the money to go back to school to do that. I have thought about selling real estate but you have to already have a job in a real estate agency so that you can do training under someone with a license.
I love the job I have now (911 dispatcher/jailer) but I am looking for something closer to the "farm". Hubby would like it if I didnt have to drive so far especially in the wintertime.

Posted - Mar 13 2007 : 4:12:54 PM Amish (and I'm not kidding!) I thought it just seemed like all of my favorite things in one lifestyle. But I am far to outspoken and opinionated to have been one for long. And they don't educate women beyond 6th or 8th grade depending on the order. I don't do subservient very well! So, reality check- I went to school for Horticulture and Landscape Architecture and worked in those fields for many years. After having children that little voice in the back of my head kept saying "Didn't you want to be a teacher too?" So after going back to school I have an ability to be a reading specialist or an Art teacher! I have done both and love it! The world is always full of surprises if you just keep the door open to new possibilities! For anyone who thinks it's too late...There was an 83 year old woman in my last graduating class who went back to college just because she wanted to satisfy herself with knowing she had furthered her education and completed her goal. Needless to say...she got a standing ovation and was one cool Granny! Sometimes we think we have given up on our dreams, but in reality they have taken on new form and meaning. Sometimes different is better! I didn't expect at 46 to be raising a 13 year old and have a 7 week old baby join our family. There are surprises around every corner! And sometimes they sneak up on you and steal your heart...be open to the possibilities! Make new dreams if the old ones have faded and take steps to make them happen! Dream outloud and live your best life, I'm sure trying!
with a happy heart |
