Posted - Mar 16 2007 : 9:23:05 PM Lorij, Thank you so much! Snow and ice and long winters, green and cold and moutains and hills n valleys, I love...the mud...hmmmmm not so much But I know it comes with the teritory! How long did you live there and in what area exactly? Did you leave because of the long winters? though the growing season was short, were you able to grow enough to feed your family with produce? Did you have a green house and would you recomend one for the area? I am already in contact with the extension, but any other good sources for information on varieties that do well in the area etc? ANY information would be much appriciated! And thank you so much for your detailed discription, I LOVED it! Hugz! Talitha

Posted - Mar 15 2007 : 05:04:01 AM There is someone on here who lives in Vermont but she doesn't post much & I can't remember her screen name. I have been going to Vermont all my life (55 yrs.) you will love it. Burlington has MUCH to offer. Go to Vermont.com & hit the relocation info & they will send you a packet. They have a sheep & wool festival every year in Essex Junction (near Burlington) so we get there alot. The great thing about it as someone said, your in the small city of Burlington w/ MUCH culture but then step out just a few miles & your in pure country. The other great thing about Burlington is the city is GREEN, the enviroment is very important to the city as well as the state & they think & sct green including w/ buildings. You'll love it!

Rebekah, I LOVE winters so that is not a problem for me and I LOVE New England but never spent a lot of time in VT. What I remember is that it is beautiful and that they have yummie wonderful mayple syrup and candies there ! Right now I am in Okinawa Japan but I hate the weather here...very muggy and hot in the summer and very muggy and chilly in the "winter" (which never gets colder then about 50) I love four seasons and I love winter dearly...snow me in anyday! As long as I have wood for my fire, food and water and a cozy spot to curl up...I am happy as anyone can be!
Julie, Thank you so much for your input as someone that lived there. From all I have been able to gather online Burlington souded like the perfect place for us. I love culture and a mix of old and new, just enough development to provide concerts and activities in the arts, good education, yet small enough to have hiking and outdoor activities galore and this sounded like it! So I really appriciate hearing it from someone who has been there and remembers it!
Birdi, How Neat! Maine is where I wanted to settle. For me Maine has it all! Mountains and beaches, culture and seclusion! I LOVE it there! But sadly have not been able to find DH a good job there. Then this opened up in VT and when I looked into it, it sounded like a perfect place for us. And I totally agree that the CC is a really great place to get information, I always do that! BUT...I had not thought about getting the paper and that is a GREAT idea!! I hope they will send it to me at my base here in Japan. In a way it seems harder being over here trying to find something over there...but I like challenges ! Thank you again and I hope you LOVE it there where you are!
Jennifer, Thank you so much for your positive vote! It is wonderful hearing from those that have been there and remember! My parents took me all through New England when I was young and I fell in love and thought it was all so very beautiful but now don't really remember which town/memory was in which state lol which really does not help at this point! I remember Maine because I lived there twice since I have been an "adult" and all but not VT, so I needed some help!
Thank You all once again so very much and if you have ANYTHING more to add or say please let me know! I need to know everything I can and SOON!! Hugz! Talitha

Posted - Mar 14 2007 : 1:51:01 PM I don't live in Vermont-but I'm another one who LOVES it there. We go there on vacation every year-I love Bennington and Burlington, and we spend some time just outside of Stowe.

Posted - Mar 14 2007 : 09:33:17 AM I am in Maine, not Vermont..kinda the same on the western side of Maine. It is true about the gray winters, but if you enjoy any crafting or outdoor activities, you will endure them easily. It was always my dream to be here as well. I love the snow and winters, though. I have bounced around this state some, trying to find my niche. Once I discovered that there ARE mountains in Maine, I was at peace. I have heard so many things about the area in Vermont that you speak of.
But anyway, when I did this (packed and moved to Maine), I had no way to gain information either. Call the Chamber of Commerce there and they will send you a wealth of information. Real information...not just the touristy things you'll find on line and such. I also called and got the local newspaper sent to me for awhile. I was not under any specific deadlines and had time to look around without being there. From the paper, I gained rental and realestate numbers. Sometimes on the internet, you don't always get all of the information. These 2 sources will help you gain real, non tourist info. I called several businesses around the area, until I found someone chatty who wanted to talk about where they live. Good luck and don't be discouraged.

Posted - Mar 14 2007 : 08:09:07 AM I grew up in Vermont although I don't live there anymore. I lived in Quechee when I was growing up until I was 18 and went away to college. My parents moved out of Vermont about 3 years ago. I loved it there. Burlington is such a great area. It is very trendy with the university and I love the cobblestone walkways near the mall area. there are a ton of cute little coffee shops and restaurants. They always had this really cool festival on New Years eve called First Night and that was a lot of fun. Burlington gives you a little tiny taste of "city" life but still has that great country feel. Course two miles out of town and you really are in the country. the lake is beautiful too. I loved it when I was there and there is a part of me that still misses it. There was just som much culture and things to do that we don't have where I am now. I think it is a wonderful place.

Posted - Mar 14 2007 : 04:53:01 AM Talitha, I just have to pipe in here. I don't live in Vermont, but I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE Vermont! I have dreams of living there one day. If I could pack up and go anywhere...it'd be there (or Maine.) What's not to love?? The only down side that has ever come up in my conversations with residents is the gray winters. I'd take 'em! Where are you now? Are you used to the cold and snowy weather?
