This morning was so hard getting back into a routine of getting up early to get the kids ready for school. We all got pretty lazy this summer sleeping in later than usual. I am now watching a little girl that is a friend of my husband too, so I have to bring her along with my two. Getting back into this routine this morning was hard!!! So I was wondering, when does school start where you're from?

Hello All,
An interesting topic for a 3rd grade teacher to read about. My first day was last Monday for Pre-Inservice and the kids' first day was today. We get out (barring snow makeup days) May 17th or somewhere close to that. BUT, and this is a BIG but in these days. We have just the 24th-January 1 for Christmas Break, only Good Friday off for Easter, and Martin Luther King and President's Day only if we have not had any snow days up to that point. It makes for a very long school year sometimes. As a teacher I just plan a week between January and March to do a special study project. It helps. It is fun to rib my sister and cousins who also teach that we've been out a month before they even think about getting out. Have a great school year. You homeschoolers keep doing your thing!!
Peace,
Joy

If it's not illegal, unsafe, or immoral, why not try anything once? Who knows? You may come back for a second helping!

It's funny how school districts are so different all over the country. I wonder why some schools start so eary and some seem to start so late. Oh well. Today was easier getting up than yesterday but I still wish it were summer vacation!!!

My dauther is a teahcer and they started on the 12 August. It has not been easy for the family to get back in "School" routine. They spent lots of time with me this summer and that was a treat for all of us.

Our local HS started today. The elementary and JrHS start the 29th. We homeschool through a Charter and we have a start date of the 29th.Eventhough we start the same day as our local elem. school, we get out about two weeks earlier (just before Memorial week-end). We just don't get snow days or teacher's inservice days, so we get our required days in sooner. Works for us!

I sort of like what our schools do here..instead of a once a month in service day like in CAlif where we lived before, they do an early day every Monday (they get out 45 min early) if monday is a no school day for a holiday or some such thing they do it on the first day back. It is sure nice. I am always so afraid I will forget that the kids get out early and be late to get them...but I never have in 3 years here so I guess I am safe..haha

We start the day after labor day. Though we home school, we stick to the public school schedule, except for all the in-service days and such. We have had such a busy summer, I am kind of looking forward to the routine of school again. Simply,Julia

Went back and got certified to teach and started out in a literacy program for at risk kids. It sort of took off from there and I am doing a stint this year p/t as a reading specialist for 1-5th grades! Our kids start on August 31st which is early for us. They usually don't start until the Tuesday after Labor Day. Then they get out about the middle of June each year. I'm ready and so is my daughter except we both hate getting up early every day.

Yes, Bramble, give us an update. I had "gathered" from your posts that you were a "retired" landscaper, stay at home mom who volunteered at school. Guess I missed a big chunk there, didn't I?

It's September 7th here for us too and they got out on June 13th. Sister in law in CT goes back the week before Labor Day and then they start all over again on the 7th. My son's best friend that moved to Phoenix started last Monday Aug 8th and they got out before Memorial Day! I am going in this week to set up my classroom and then I can goof off until we report on the 6th!

It starts here on the 24th so we have another 9 days to cram the last of the summer stuff into our days! We went on a short campout this past weekend and NEED to go swimming at least twice more. Our kids get out just before memorial day for the summer too.
My kis are ready...they found out who their teachers will be (all good news) and have the new school clothes ready..now we just need to get in the getting up an hour or so earlier routine..ugh!!

Definitely. We generally get out a few days before Memorial Day, earlier if we haven't used our built-in
"bad weather" days.

I would prefer to start after Labor Day, but I know my kids are ready to get back to school already.

It varies everywhere, doesn't it? My SIL teaches in eastern Colorado and they always start this week, too. Where I grew up was also a farming community and we always started somewhere between the 25-31 of August. In my area now, and in the Seattle area, school starts after Labor Day weekend. I think it's the 7th this year. My neighbor is a teacher, and she like school to start a couple days before Labor Day, that way the kids take those days to settle in, and when they return from the long weekend they are ready to "hit the books", so to speak.

But the advantage to starting early is the kids get out in mid-May. I'm not sure of the whole logic of this, but I think it originally revolved around harvest time. These days, who knows!

We start Friday, August 19. Still a couple of days of "freedom." We have two birthdays in the house this week, so we're celebrating that way. We'll start "practicing" getting up by Wednesday -- and going to bed earlier!
