Some of you might remember the thread in which I asked for help in deciding what to do about moving to our cabin in Montana. My mom is in an Alzheimer's home and it will become necessary soon to start supplementing her income to pay the bill. So many of you offerred advice and support which was really appreciated and helpful. I thought you might like an update. I still have been unable to find any funding to supplement mom's income to pay her monthly Alz. Home bill, but I have made a decision about what I am going to do. Almost all of you encouraged me to follow my dream and move to the cabin, despite my daughter's objections. Wellllll..... I gave notice this morning to my landlord and I will be moving to the cabin the first of April!!! I feel really good about it - like I have taken a giant step of confidence in myself. We don't have electricity or running water yet, but the cabin is sound and we have a really good wood cook stove that heats the place. I will be doing my sewing by generator and hauling my water, but I really do feel good about my decision. It's really amazing how much support I felt from you all, even though I have never met any of you. I will post some pictures of the cabin soon if any of you are interested. It's pretty rustic still, but we built every bit of it ourselves and we're pretty proud of it. Thanks again everyone! |

What a bittersweet post. On one hand, I'm so sorry about your mother's health, and I know this must be difficult for you. Of course, your daughter's "disapproval" of your move is also something that I'm sure causes you some concern.
On the other hand, though, you have made a decision that feels right for you, and that is always such a great feeling. I can't wait to see pictures of your cabin (wow! built by yourselves), and to hear how things go. I wish you all the best!

How old is your Mother? Is she receiving Social Security? Does she own her home? I used to be an Outreach worker for Medicaid (not Medicare)here in Spokane and we focused on finding low income children without medical insurance. Also, recently, my husband and I had to find money to supplement his father's stay in a nursing home in Nebraska. All these questions (which seem really nosy)pertain to whether or not your mother would be eligible for state Medicaid to pay for what her income does not cover. YOu should contact a Department of Social and Health Services caseworker if you have not already done so and find out if your mother would be eligible for this program. My godmother suffered from Alzheimer's too and because of the expense my godfather had to obtain a divorce in order for her to be elibible for state help. It was a sad decision, but necessary for her care. There just was not enough money.

Sherri, Great news. What a grand adventure awaits you. When we made our decision to move here to northeastern Washington 1 1/2 years ago we had sold our house in Minnesota and had nothing to move to here. A friend of a friend was willing to rent us her small cabin on top of a ridge with the most spectacular views you can imagine. It had a failing solar system that rarely worked . Used kerosene lamps to read by, we hauled water from down the hill, used a doorless teepee shaped outhouse (what a magnificiet view we had) Jim took solar showers I used the showers in the laudromat in town. We felt lucky it had a propane stove and fridge. It was wonderful. All our friends thought we were crazy--we were happy as can be.JoAnn

Sherri -- I am so delighted for you! And proud! Just stand firm no matter how much the kids pout! I will be praying for a solution regarding your mother. Hugs to you!
