I thought it would be fun to share the stories of your kid's names. What are they? Why did you choose the name? What does the name mean?

I will start:
Eliza Gean, she is named after my Grandma, it means consecrated to God.
Julia Lynn, husband named her after the Beatles song, it means happy, which fits her to a tee! She is very calm and a friend to all.
Chloe Katherine, named after a distant relative, it means of the earth, it fits too, she is always gardening and digging for bugs to love.
Emmeline Lula, named after husbands grandma, means healer of the universe, which I thought was so beautiful, I hope it is a spiritual gift of sorts for her, to heal.
So, friends share the your stories and names!
Kate

My Daughter is Melissa Rose. Melissa because my husband likes the Allman Brother's song, "Sweet Melissa". Rose after the Clan Rose of Scotland that my husband's family belongs to. I just liked the way it sounded, as beautiful as she is.

My son is Andrew James. Andrew after the Scottish saint and James after my father, although my husband insists that it had something to do with a Jimmy Buffett song. I let him think so...Anything to keep the peace.

Both kids have many nicknames, but when together they are often referred to as "AJ & The Missers".

I thought I replied to this one before, but I didn't see a post from me in the mix! So...(you probably all know this already!)...baby is Jackson Thomas, born on January 25th of this year. "Jackson" is my husband's grandpa (deceased, not the "real" grandpa but the one that they all knew as grandpa since the "real" one passed away when DH's father was just a boy...) and "Thomas" is for my pop.

Most people call him "Jack" and I thought I would too, but I mainly just call him "Jackson." I love the name! And I love my boy!!!

Nathanael Luke is our latest name choice for children (he's 1 week old today)
"Nathanael" - gift of God
"Luke" - light

we liked Samuel Owen, but our last name starts with a 'b' so we didn't want S.O.B. for initials--LOL!

then we found Nathanael and we already liked the name Luke, it just kind of went together.

and weirdly enough, all of our children have an 'l' in every name--which just kind of happened. no one will notice but us of course.
Joel William
Caitlyn Elise
Elia Noelle (we chose Elia because we liked the name Elijah, but she was a girl, not a boy so we chose the feminine form of Elijah which is the mirror image of the name Joel in Hebrew--lots of people use Joel and Elijah for twin names)
Nathanael Luke

My favorite name ever was "Ripley Tangerine" that was the name a friend of mine from high school named his little girl. Very unique and yet doesn't sound totally out there either.

Hey gals, Kate here...Kate Talley. For some reason I couldn't log on, so I had to create a new "identity" Katiedid was my childhood nickname, so there's no confusion, we are one and the same... I too love to hear the stories of everyones names.

I have 2 girls, the first one is Kaylee Renee named after my Mother Brenda Kay my Grandpa Joe Lee and my Monther in Law Coleen Renee. The second one is Halsey Jo who is named after my husband halleck and myself Bobbi Jo.

Both my family and Hals have traditions about namesakes and things so we went along those lines as well.

I have 4 children

Daughter 1 - Victoria Fawn. My mother chose Victoria after queen Victoria(Vikki as we call her) and Fawn is a long standing family name. Of course my name is Fawn Leann, My grandmother is Fawn Muaella, My great grandmother is Fawn Grace and My great great grandmother is Fawn Garrett.

Son 1 - Oliver Jason. Named after Oliver Cromwell, a British military commander of the 17th century who ruled the country after the civil war and Jason meaning "to heal"

Son 2 - Alexander Scott. My mother wanted him to be Alexander Ryan and My dad wanted him to Anthony Scott...so I chose a name from each. They picked Alexander for Alexander the Great, King of Macedon, he is the most famous bearer of this name. In the 4th century BC he built a huge empire out of Greece, Egypt, Persia, and parts of India. This was also the name of emperors of Russia, kings of Scotland and Yugoslavia, and eight popes and Scott is From a surname which meant "Scotsman" in Old English.

Daughter 2 - Elizabeth Danielle. Elizabeth meaning "my God is an oath" but after John the Babtist's mother. and Danielle meaning "God is my judge"

I loved learning about all of the names of the children.

Fawn

Tina Michelle Posted - Jun 16 2006 : 11:39:48 AM
My first child a daughter is named Naomi Michelle..Naomi meaning "pleasant one" and the Michelle after my middle name.born 4/2/91

then nine years later I had a little boy after dr's basically were telling me I wouldn't be able to have any more..blah, blah, blah..
anyhow fooled them huh? LOL (actually I didn't even know I was pregnant until I was 5 months along and the doc said..not only are you pregnant, but you are 5 months along and none of your friends are going to believe you are so far along and didn't know it..you better hurry up on getting that nursery ready!)LOL it was so odd having babies 9 yrs apart...
anyhow..I named him Paul Ian..Paul after his dad and because we have scottish and Irish backgrounds we both liked the name Ian..together the names mean "little one God is gracious" and we felt that certainly we had been God had been gracuious and blessed us with yet another child.
We call him Ian though because there are 3 Paul's in the family..(my husband and my father in law and now my son, then one of my husbands friends from school is named Paul..my mom in law and I had fun one day when all 4 paul's were at her house..we hollered "Paul" ..and then started giggling when they all said "huh?")
paul Ian is my leap year baby..born 2/29/00

then I have our latest addition to the family Hannah Emmalynn who was born 2 weeks before my beloved grandmother died..I was going to name her Emmalina on the middle name after me(Tina), my sister Emily and the middle name of my sister Sharon Kathleen..but decided I liked the sound of Emmalynn better....and had always wanted a daughter named Hannah..so Hannah Emmalynn which all together translates to :"God's grace embracing all things beautiful" 7/25/04

So, there you have it..the names of my clan.

I've got:

Andrew David: means Brave and Strong, Beloved of God. I picked Andrew when I was 12 and knew his middle name would be his dad, whoever he turned out to be LOL!

Celia Christine: Celia from the book Celia's House by D.E Stevenson, a favorite growing up. And Christine after my mom

Clara Irene: means Clear and Bright and this baby gave us clarity to be sure. She's named for a twist of dh's mom, Carol Irene; I liked Clara better. She had heart defect and died at 9 weeks, radically effecting our lives ever after.

Wheaton Thomas: Wheaton we just loved and Thomas is dh's father. We joke about his becoming a Supreme court judge, "The Honorable Judge Wheaton Thomas Graham" :D

Rowan Kenneth: means "red haired man" apprpropriate as we are all redheads! (www.sixredheads.com) Kenneth after my dad.

But the dreamers of the day are dangerous people because they enact their dreams into reality with eyes wide open.

I also loved hearing all the names, so many absolutely beautiful names. My husband wanted to name a girl Sayward, which I totally hated, would not have it......so my first born (a daughter) got named Angela. Then I couldn't for the life of my come up with a name that I felt went with Angela, so I went through the baby book of names and came up with Theola.......she hated it for a while, but now that she is grown, she likes it because it is different. My two boys are simply, Lucas and Tyler. No middle names, but I wish I'd given them my family names. Which would have been Lucas Lorenzo and Tyler Harrison.

I think I'll write some of the names down so I can give them to my daughter for whenever she decides to give me a grandchild!!

Love reading all the names. I'm surprised how many are named Grace. I really like that name.

Oldest daughter--Stacy Marie--although she was going to be Dana Marie until about a month before she was born. Marie is part of her Grandma's name, RoseMarie.

Oldest son--Graham Scott--Graham is my mom's maiden name and the Scottish clan we are most active in. He has always gone by Scott because that's what his dad wanted to call him(the only way he would agree to Graham). Now that he is an adult he often goes by Graham. And he was married in a kilt--the Graham plaid.

Younger daughter--Sheila Rose--the other half of the Grandma's name. I love Sheila's name. My friend Carla and I came up with that one Sunday afternoon. Until then we had one name only, Sean for a boy or a girl.

Much younger son--Cameron Michael--Cameron for no particular reason except we liked it and Michael after one of his uncles.

Two grand kids(both belong to Sheila) Aiden Allen and Emma Rose. Not crazy about the name Aiden but it fits him. Love, love love the name Emma Rose. In fact, the other grandma and I were both very disappointed(for a short while) when we found out Aiden was going to be a boy because we both wanted an Emma Rose.

Neither of my girls are named for anyone.

Grace Hannah means the same thing in Greek and Hebrew, "Grace from God", and though I am not Christian, it means a lot to me because when I had her, at that time in my life she was my saving grace and my grace from God.

Zoe Fae is excellent, IMHO, Zoe mean "life" in Greek and Fae is Latin for "fate", where we get the word "faerie". She was not planned and by ALL accounts I should not have gotten pregnant. I chart and my numbers were dead on as usual, as I run like clockwork. So, we figure that someone in their infinite wisdom deemed her to be.

SHould we have another, which is the plan in a year or two, a son would be named Jasper William Dustin. Jasper because it's a great name, WIlliam after my grandpa and Dustin is a family name in Rob's family.
A daughter would be Margaret Lola after His grandma and mine, both deceased.

hello to all, and wow what beautiful names!
I have four children
my oldest is now 16 and his name is Johnathan Michael (not very original except the spelling which was a mistake) now he is "John"
my oldest daughter is Paige Emily. Originally she was going to be Grace Elizabeth (Grace after my mother who died when I was 24 and Elizabeth after a friend) but my pregnant neice wanted Grace too, so I spent all night looking for a name that was strong and yet feminine.
Dear son no. 2 is Elijah Emmanuel. Named after two wonderful people who were inspirations to us both.
Dear daughter no. 2 is Summer Butterfly. Funny the reactions we get about that. Older people think it is aweful, the young people think it is "cool". She is named Summer as the rest of us (me, dear husband and all the other kids) are all born in the first two weeks of January, she was supposed to be born the middle of June. She came two weeks early. Butterfly was picked as I had just finished reading a book by Julia Butterfly Hill about how she lived in a tree for 2 years to save it from being cut down. I admired her conviction and wanted to pass that on to my daughter. She has a boy in her class that was born withing a month of her named Cree River.

I always thought my boy would be named Levi. However, when it came time, the name had already been used for BIL son, so we had to start over. we struggled to find a name, we wanted something different, but not super teasable. During lots of joking we spotted a business called Wesson Optical. Wesson was jokingly mentioned, and ended up as West. Which became fitting as my husband's home state was in the mid-west, and we lived on the west coast. We then were joking about the middle name of coast, but thought for sure that would bring on teasing. We finally choose O'Pal, for my MIL whose name is Opal. We pronounce his name something like Old Pal. His name is West O'Pal. Our daughter was supposed to be Alexandria, but for some reason it didn't fit. You know sometimes names just don't fit. Struggling and again looking for something different, but not outrageous. She would have been East Opal, if we thought she could make it through childhood with out becoming a joke. It just sounded like a jewel to me. One evening while watching the news, I caught an interview of a women who was wearing a name tag that said Ariana. I had really no idea how the name was pronounced but I really liked the way it looked. So she became Ariana Marie. We pronounce it as Airry Anna. Marie is my middle name, which I dropped when I was married. The name Alexandria, which I always loved, was given to the child I lost.

Elizabeth

Not how long, but how well you have lived is the main thing.

My dear miracle daughter's name is Makinlee Georganna. We tried for 3 years to get pregnant. I knew this would probably be our one and only child and I wanted her to know where she came from. DH loved the name McKinley but I wanted Kaylee so we compromised spelling her name Makinlee. Lee is my madien name. Georganna is after my grandmother who was like a mother to me and my best friend. She passed away and was buried on my birthday the year I was pregnant. Her name was Georgia Lee. Anna is after my DH's mother Ann who was killed by a drunk driver when DH was 13 years old. She was killed the year I was born.

My oldest son is Sean Robert. Sean is pronounced Shawn. Originally I wanted Jeremy Robert, but his Dad wanted Jeremiah ( after the movie Jeremiah Johnson) I agreed begrudgingly (SP?) and figured he'd get called Jeremy. Then one day a few weeks before I was due we changed it to Sean. Since his dad's name is John( Sean is Gaelic for John) and last name is McDermott. We thought we would go with the Irish. Robert is after my Dad. Sean has always been very defensive of his name and Irish heritage. When he meets someone with his name he always wants to know how they spell it. He feels Sean is the correct way of course. He also showed his family heritage by having Mom make him a kilt with the family tartan plaid which he wore to prom his senior yr. Birthday is 3-7-78
#2 is Jeremiah James. He's called J.J. I lost out on this one. His Dad was still stuck on the Jeremiah thing. James is after his paternal grandpa and uncle. The JJ nickname was due to the fact that bro. Sean could not say Jeremiah. Birthday 3-7-80
That's right they have the same birthday. If JJ had waited 46 minutes it would have been exactly 2yrs apart.
#3 is Patrick Timothy We were going Irish and figured we keep the trend. The only problem was Daddy wanted Timothy Patrick. I decieded he got his Jeremiah so I got Patrick Timothy this time. He does not use a nickname but goes by Patrick. When signing his artwork it is P.T. McD.
Birthday is 2-15-82.
#4 is Casey William. Again we stuck with the Irish except this included family. Casey was named for great aunt Elizabeth Casey and William was my grandpa. Both had passed away the year before Casey came. BD Is 10-27-84. This name worked well as from a very youge age he has always loved trains like Casey Jones. Funny how that works out.

I never liked my name, Theoanne so I tried to give them interesting names but ones other people could pronounce. Sean Had problems with People calling him Seen, but even when he was little he always told them it was Irish for John and that was his Daddy.
This was fun I've enjoyed all the stories. Jenny I see you have a Casey too. Good choice.

Oh by the way I was named after my Grandma who was Theo Gertrude. Her Dad was Theodore. So I guess it just rolled down.

David Josiah is named after his Dad and his best friend, Joe. He is the 4th generation of David's and since there was already a David Joe we had to come up with something else. We had tried every variation of Joe we could come up with and were having no luck until one night we were watching Young Guns on TV and heard Kiefer Sutherland's character say that his name was Josiah "Doc" Scurlock and we both started babbling at each other. We headed out the next morning to rent the movie and when we were sure of the name that was "THE" name.

Was funny though when we came to visit my Grandmother....very very very Southern Baptist....and she remarked on how neat it was that we'd named him after 2 kings (especially since she gave up on my religious education years ago after throwing up her hands and declaring that I'd try the patience of St. Peter himself) and we just stared at her, making the appropriate noises about "yeah, um hum, sure".

Had to whip out the Bible and check it out when she wasn't looking.....sure enough it was in there. I don't know if anybody ever told her that wasn't where it came from or not but we're definatly not going to.

Autumn Susanna Cheyenne is named after the old western, Cheyenne Autumn but we switched it around because it seemed everybody was naming their babies Cheyenne at that time. The Susanna came in because Ds is named after family and I wanted her to have a family name too.

My mother's middle name is Sue and his mother's first name is Sue so it seemed appropriate. Only problems was that I wanted to drop the Cheyenne but Dh wasn't going for it.

We argued for months about it and even went to the hospital with no resolution and it was getting pretty ugly so I decided that since we couldn't agree and neither of us would be happy with the other choice to give her both. It's been a wonderful choice to as she fits all 3 of her names to a T and would have been incomplete with out them.

Babies have strokes too.....

What beautiful names and stories to go along with them.
Here are mine:
Charles Nathan - Charles for my grandfather and Nathan for my best friend's nephew, who was the cutest little boy. I just knew if I ever had a son, he would have to be a Nathan!
John Albert - John for my husband's father, who died the year before John was born, and Albert for my great-grandfather. If he was a girl, he would have been Avalyn.
Ainslie Kimball - the only girl. Must be the farmgirl in me- Ainslie means meadow, and Kimball is my maiden name. Seventeen years ago you never heard the name Ainslie. Now......
truebluecountrygirl Posted - Apr 22 2006 : 06:13:18 AM
Melinda Grace - Melinda was my paternal grandma's middle name (Mary Melinda) I don't remember her, she died when I was about 2. But we share a love of home and family and cooking - that woman cooked at a train station in Boston, and apparently kept all her recipes in her head! Grace - for the blessings of God's Grace in my life - especially having my first child at almost 40, and having a very easy pregnancy!

Orrin Tucker Dean - Orrin is from a Louis L'Amour (The Sacketts) and my hubby is a big fan. Tucker - it's the one name we could agree on - I liked Tanner or Dalton, but hubby didn't. Dean - from an old cowboy friend of mine. He let me purchase my first horse by cleaning stalls and baking blackberry pies. He passed away last fall, and I miss him every day!

There are so many names I love - especially the "old-fashioned" ones like Emmeline or Winston - they bring to mind a simpler time - I sometimes wish I'd had about 10 kids so I could use all the names I love! (Then, I wake up and slap myself, LOL!!) No, just wish I could have "convinced" hubby to have kids when "the clock" first started ticking - I get frustrated with my kids sometimes, who doesn't, but I always recognize the great blessings and the privilege of being responsible for 2 new lives. God is good!

Our ten-month-old daughter is named Linnaea Grace. My grandfather, of Swedish descent, had a cousin named Linnea and I always loved the name and the flower, Linnaea borealis. We went with the "-aea" spelling after much hemming and hawing on my part. I liked "Grace" because of its meaning within Christianity as well as its old-timey connotations.
