I was wondering what you all do for your husbands on Father's Day. Any traditions to share? I want to make sure my DH knows how much we appreciate him. Things have been stressful lately with his job and his family...would love ideas to make his day special but remain frugal...any ideas?

Good morning,

WE usually take our dad camping. He likes to fish from his boat. I remember as a kid we used to camp alot as a family and go fishing, of course, at that time we didn't have a boat so we just sat on the river banks. Which was just fine for us, we loved it and we did a lot of night fishing. It would have been real hard to have a boat with having a huge family of 8 kids. But now, he is enjoying being retired and going on little fishing trips. ONe of my brothers usually goes to Wappapello Lake in SE Missouri and gets a good sized camping area reserved and then as the rest of us are able, we all join in. Usually by Saturday everyone who can make it is there and we just have a great time. So it's nothing fancy, or even terribly expensive, but I think dad likes it so much because it reminds him of all the times that we would do this when we were growing up. And we love it for the same reason, it's just a wonderful time. Wapappello is a state park and they are very reasonable to camp in, so that might be an idea if that is an activity you all like to do.

The ideal day would be for all of us to go to a Cardinal's game, Dad is a HUGE fan. He has so much Cardinal memorabilia, but it's always fun to give him more because he just loves it, so this year we are covering both areas. Last year we all went in together and bought a brick paver that was included in the sidewalk around the new stadium. IN doing so, they send you a souvenier brick to keep at home, so we are going to present him with it this year. I can't wait to see his face. So we will definitely have to find a way to go to a game so he can see the real thing in the sidewalk by the stadium.

Unfortunately, none of my immediate family will get to join us, it will just be me and our son's 2 dogs that I am "babysitting" while he and his new wife are on their honeymoon. My DH will be working and the other kids are unavailable or out of town, so I won't have the pleasure of their company, but it will still be fun spending part of the weekend with my dad and siblings.

I hope you all have a wonderful day and a terrific weekend doing "dad" things or fondly remebering all the things you did with your dad, if he is no longer with you. Dads are truly a gift from God and saying a prayer of thanks to Him for him is one of the best gifts I believe we can give our fathers.

In His hands,
Lynda L.

Pray in faith and you will not live in doubt.

Hi there!

westernhorse51...my hubby likes to golf too in fact he was supposed to go this weekend comin with some men from church and had to back out...so u may have something there. He's really good friends with our youth pastor so I think I may talk to his wife and see if we can't arrange a "boys day out" for them. My daughter, his step daughter, is 17 and still makes him homemade cards for holidays!

Frannie....a midnight picnic....oh my goodness how much fun does that sound? I think I might run that past the kids and start a new tradition....it would be a surprise at least the first year!what was your midnight meal?

You guys are great! thanks for the good ideas!!

mother's and father's day .. we always go somewhere special ... always have .. from the time the girls were wee ones right through adulthood. doesn't have to be FAR AWAY or EXOCTIC ... just doing something out of the ordinary with each other .. geared to something the 'mother' or 'father' enjoys. (which would be some antiquing and a river-side picnic for me ... and of course, some hiking or biking with hank) those were some of the things on our list. one time, the girls and i prepared a 'midnight picnic' for hank .. woke him up at the stroke of midnight father's day .. and had a picnic and read 'jack london' stories to him. we've taken him to a rodeo .. to a civil war museum .. and civil war battlefields .. the girls always hand-made a gift and card for him .. now that they are grown and live in other states .. if we cannot be with them on father's day .. hank and i still do something fun and romantic.

True Friends, Frannie

Hi Ida, for fathers day especially if frugal is needed and most times it is, we give him breakfast in bed. My daughter & I always MAKE cards for him and he loves to play golf (can't always) so we try to get something ahead of time that is golf related. One year it was a gitf cert., a new set of golf balls etc. We make him his favorite dessert and a nice dinner. He gets to do whatever HE wants for that day. With money being tight most years, he said he loves the breakfast in bed, homemade cards & doing what he wants best of all. Good luck.
