Posted - May 24 2010 : 2:14:36 PM So, today, my broody hen is hatching 3 eggs, I have 30 in the incubator, 14 Barred Rocks + 6 Easter Eggers @2 weeks old, 13 2 month old Polish + Old English, and 18 laying hens.
Let's do the math:
3+30+14+6+13+18 = CRAZY WOMAN!
I must be nuts! Lol.

Posted - Aug 04 2010 : 06:47:51 AM Don't feel bad! You're not crazy, you just love chickens! I'm starting to get that way too. When it's time to order replacements, I spend hours combing over the magazine and can't wait to see what a beautiful flock I'll have. I used to have a boarding kennel named "All Renee's Kritters", notice all the first letters spell "ARK"? That's what my husband laughingly calls our farm, "The Ark" :-)

Posted - Aug 03 2010 : 9:20:26 PM Love the Barred Rocks Lynda! The Mille Fleur are my faves (they're so little and cute!), but the Rocks are pretty, and they're the friendliest. They forage for their food really well. If I had to pick one all-purpose chicken only, it would be them!

Then added 10 Rhodie Reds, then 3 Auracanas, then 10 Barred Rocks, 3 more Auracanas, and next will be Cochins, Faverolles and Muscovy Ducks. Not chicken fever, CHICKEN PLAGUE! LOL

Posted - May 27 2010 : 06:03:30 AM Lol, that's how I am, too. There are soooo many interesting breeds! But, I have told myself that I need to focus on a heritage breed or two...ok, or three! Lol. One of my goals is to raise critically endangered poultry. I'm just getting in all of my experience with the more common breeds. Right now, I have:
Silkies (white and buff) and Silkie crosses (new chicks x3) Frizzles in white and black (Named: Miraboo and ???) 1 Langshan Cochins in white, black, partridge, and blue splash Red sex links White Leghorns Plymouth Rocks in white, barred, and buff (Barred hens are both 'Doris', buff is 'Gladys') Polish in buff laced, white crested black, and golden laced (One wcb is 'Wayward Jones') 1 Millefleur cockerel ('Bootsy Collins') 3 Rhode Island reds (one is 'Ethyl') 2 Lemon blue Old English bantams ('Dovie' and ???) 2 Splash OE bantams 1 cochin bantam (Lily)
Wow, I hope that's it! Lol. I am hatching Easter Eggers (also known as Araucana/Ameraucana, which is typically incorrect) for another farmer, so I get to hatch 'em and send 'em on their way! So, that's a lot of fun. This time I have 8 Silkie/Sizzle eggs...I get to candle them tonight and see how they have progressed in a week :0D

Posted - May 26 2010 : 03:38:03 AM Right there w/ ya!
This year started out w/ 3 hatching out by way of our own hens. I wanted chicks for my birthday.
Then I ordered 6 by way of the feed store......wanted 6 more Polish just for kucks.....then 9 silkies 2 weeks ago from our siklie lady
All this in addition to 25 we already had.
YOu can never get enough...especially with all the pretty breeds out there!
Lets hope yours are as prolific at laying as mine are! |

Posted - May 25 2010 : 9:05:07 PM No problem with that Deborah....some animals are a "better fit" for some people. We have rescued several cats, and found loving homes for them. We have our three rescue inside cats now, and love them to pieces. We've had our Himalayan for 13 years and the other two for 3 years. We rescued a Golden Retriever and had her for 6 years until she died, of which I didn't think I would ever recover from that!!! I can only imagine the craziness at your house with 9 rescue cats and 3 dogs!!! I'm sure you had times you wanted to go live "with the chickens"!!! I'd love to have chickens and when my daughter and I figure out a way to get to the country, we will be looking for a Crazy Chicken Lady mug for us too!! Ha!! Hugs and smiles, Lin

Posted - May 24 2010 : 7:38:06 PM Lin,
I'd TOTALLY pay you for a crazy chicken mug! Lol. Kris, I now have 2 more broodies, though one I found today was pecking her own egg, so that's never a good sign. She's still very young, so I will likely put her back out in the yard with the rest to break her broodiness, till she is ready.
Anyway, I just love babies! NOw I need to thin out some of what I have....lol

Posted - May 24 2010 : 6:40:12 PM Amanda, that sounds like me. I have broody hens all over the place and eggs hatching right now. So far only a few out of each nest has hatched. The most so far is 3. And I found one of the oldest 2 dead this morning. So 9 so far that I can see. And more hatching. Plus the 19 hens and 2 roos. Too many chickens!
Good luck with all yours.
Kris
