I just have to share, I sewed 3 cantle bags from some old denim yardage a friend gave me!! It seems to have some synthetic fibers, and will most likely hold up well enough in light rain. I wish I could remember what I paid for the D rings on one bag, the swivel hooks on the other two, the bits of webbing to hold those in place, and the sport zippers. All in all, the project was easy and for sure, on the cheap! The pattern came from Suitabilty patterns. I want to make a 1/2 bale hay bag from oilcloth ( since I have 2 full bale bags, I have the excuse!) and also insulated saddle bags from the same pattern. I have some Supplex for the liner, and the insulated stuff to line it with. I just have to figure out what to use for the outside. Does anyone think oilcloth would hold up? If not, I know where to get Cordura.
I have patterns from Suitability, for fly masks and saddle pads, too.
Fun project.

Thanks for the hot tips!!!I am very apt to drag the bags when full, as they are heavier than I am, for the most part. What a pain if they ripped first thing!

I only have the patterns I listed. Sometimes they have the patterns on Ebay and also, they are not terribly expensive. If you look at www.seattlefabrics.com, that's where they have the line of patterns and also the fabric you'll likely need, so you could combine shipping. That said, I want the pattern with the " riding sweatpants" type pattern on it! But I have plenty to sew and to do anyway right now.

Hi, Mary. I have that same pattern and have made cantle bags as gifts in the recipient's color using plastic clips and d's. And I have made several bale bags using lined cordura. But I changed the handles. The first time I tried to move a bale with the original handles, they tore. So after the first bag, I made all the others with the webbing going all the way around the bottom of the bag. Took extra; be sure to measure, but much sturdier. Last year I made a half bale bag in some brocade-type fabric to store insulated turnouts. Works great.
Isn't it fun to make your own stuff so you can get the color you want? Oh, yeah, I've made lots of nosebags, too. And I changed that pattern and added a strip of mesh lengthwise in the front. That little leather thing-y with holes doesn't seem, to me, to provide much ventilation. I've also made the bottom out of mesh. Both ways work great.

I would be a little leary of oilcloth for the hay bag due to chemicals that might leach into the hay
