We just finished our chicken tractor!
It took 3 weekends to complete and we had all the supplies here at home except the chicken wire and the big ol wheel lift / dolly thing a ma gigs my husband built so we can move it!
We brought them out on Sat. afternoon around 2pm, back to the brooder at night. Sunday they were out for about 8 hours.
My favorite part so far was when they were in it for the first time, it was so natural for them, they adapted so well. I am proud of them considering it was their first time seeing the light of day, hearing other birds, kids running around squeeling in delight, lawn mowers running and they didn't flinch a feather.
We sat and watched them as a family, just sat and watched, giggled, and talked to these trusting little ladies that have joined us. I think that was the most special part of the whole process.
Tootsie, Twitch, Marigold, Robin & Amelia Bedelia ( we call both the black and whites ones that ).
My paint ideas are deep green (we have that) and just add on some painted lavender flowers here and there for some color.
What do you put in the bottom of the coop area, under the roost? Right now they are not going up there at all, just too happy on the grass. But when we do leave them all night I think something should be on the floor of the coop, is that right? Straw in the boxes, or can we use orchard grass that we have here already?
I am blessed to have this whole experience, thank you all for your suggestions, support and care right from the start.

Just wondering how much space is a good amount to have a chicken tractor? I know it has to be moved often. Is it hard on lawns? Trying SOOOOO hard to convince hubby to get chickens.

That is the cutest thing! Those kids just sitting there watching those chickens. So sweet. And I just love the coop. Great job. They will be (or probably are?) very spoiled hens for sure. Have fun with them. they look like they could start laying any day now.

I love it Stephanie! You did a great job! Your girls look very contented in their new home! :)
For the floor under the roost you can either put pine shavings- buy at Tractor Supply or a farm store(but not cedar, bad for chicks), or they also sell bedding pellets that some people like better. I love the fresh, piney smell of the shavings, so that's what I use! I have heard people say that straw and grass clippings alone can hold too much moisture, but that you could mix them in with the shavings to save some money.
I love your little setup, one of these days I'll have to post a picture of the my run, that I did myself.
