I went up to Decatur Tn Sat. and got my 10 Red Bourbon turkey poults. They are so pretty and very sweet. I can pick any of them up and they don't go crazy like chicks do.
I have them over in the little house. So it's now the Turkey B&B. It's very warm there. I have a 60 watt bulb on them at night. But last night I forgot to go turn it on. I went to check on them this morning and there was the smallest one by itself behind the feeder. I picked it up and it was cold. So I brought it here and warmed up a little towel and wrapped it up. Kansas held it awhile then my hubby took it so Kansas could draw it a picture. She named it Cookie. But it didn't make it. It was already chilled. I am so sad. We buried it in the garden and Kansas got it a nice headstone and we put the name on it and the date. So sad.
So from now on I will be more careful. I wish I had gotten a few extra. Just in case. But things like that happen all the time. We learn as we go, as Sherry says. I really am.
The others a just fine. Walking around and eating like little pigs. I hope to put them out in about a month. They are so cute.

They are doing great so far! I did turn the light off this morning because they were all away from it. So I figured they were warm enought. Plus it's only 97 outside. I'll turn it back on tonight again. But they are growing slowly. I am surprised they aren't much bigger than this. It's been a little over a week now since I've had them. But that's ok.
I stopped at the feed store to get some grit and they were out. So I guess dirt is ok to give them? In a separate bowl maybe?
Everyone should have a few turkeys around. And these are heritage breeds so they will have more later. I feel like I am helping to preserve the past a little bit here. And they really are pretty turkeys too.

Sorry to hear about Cookie. I didn't realize that turkeys chilled that easy! I hope to someday have turkeys...good luck with the rest of yours!

YAY!!!Turkeys!
Im trying to convience hubby to let me get a few 1 for a pet and the rest for the freezer. I bet they are adorable plus I hear they are very smart! Good luck to you Kristin and sorry for your loss:(

Hey Gena! I am not sure yet. They are so darn cute and sweet little buggars. I am going to keep a tom and some hens for breeding and I know I will be attached to them for sure. They are just beautiful when they are grown. But the rest will be for sale and 1 for us. Maybe 2. I think they will be really good. But I raised my steer from a few hours old to 18 months and followed him to the butcher. I did cry when I left. He was the best cow ever. But I knew that's why I got him and that was the end result. I onle called him Cowboy. Not really a name.
And Mazie is up the road at a friend's with his bull and lots of other cows. They said they think she's probably pregnant already but she will stay til the first part of July when she should have another cycle. Then back home. And this calf will be for the freezer too. That's why we have her. And Roxie's will be too. I only have animals here for that purpose. If they don't produce, they are gone.
You should have gotten a few turkeys. Your hubby won't know for awhile yet. What kind are they?

I went to pick up my Dorking hen and roo, and the guy had lots of little turkeys. He told me exactly what you said, that the turkey babies were so friendly. I was tempted to get some, but my DH didn't even know I was getting more CHICKENS!! I thought I better not press my luck. My question is, are you going to be able to eat them if you have kinda made them pets?

congratulations kris, yes turks get cold easier than fryers or chicks. they are just more stupid too. they will drown in a dab of water. if they get wet in or outside they lay down and die. i always have to watch them more. we do always have mishaps. so glad kansas was a part of it. it is a good learning thing for them. she is so lucky to have such a good nana. and mom and dad are farmy too. how was the visit with your folks. did they stay at their place?
So our learn as ya go this week was.. we bought chicks then baby pigs. we separated the green house and put them in. well i went to feed and the pigs were not hungry. so sad.. chicks slipped in pig side. pigs did what was natural. had chicken for breakfast. they ate 8. i was very distraught at first. so the pigs moved out to the goat barn. now they are in the regular pig pen and very happy. are you going to keep some of them to breed or eat all of them? i make good money selling turkey meat. we have baby woodpeckers in a tree hole on our patio. so cute and very noisy. happy days sherrye
