together there are about 4 families with dexters here. the short legged can carry a gene for a bull dog calf. it never lives. very deformed. maybe later if there is interest i can post a photo. if they turn out. we are offering it to the university for study. the fetus was amazing to look at. we chose to buy and butcher her for meat. we knew she may carry the gene. so it proved true. we are glad with the choice made by all folks involved in the decision. she hung at about 400 pounds. she was a beautiful, straight line body.so we will know true hang weight later. just thought this was interesting. happy days sherrye

i think it takes both parents to throw the gene. if i can get them posted i will. i have to wait for the butcher to email the pics to me. happy days sherrye she did hang at 400 pounds.

I would be interested in a pic, never heard about this gene, but I know very little about Dexters, but I am always ready to learn.

hi, it is a defective gene in the cow or bull. it is more common in short legged dexters. yes the cow we butchered to day had a faulty gene pool for fetuses. so no good for breeding ok for eating. we are sharing the meat and also going to sell some we have already in a freezer. it is all closed herd dexter beef grass fed only butchered by usda shop. i was very impressed with their truck. it was all stainless steel inside and very clean. they had a way to hang so the meat carcass did not touch the stainless steel floor. they did a great fast kill and a clean skinning. so now i have to go take care of the yukky leftover stuff. wash the blood in and so forth. so happy days sherrye the weirdest looking calf i have ever seen. hows your finger?

Weird. I have never even heard anything like that. So the cow that carried that gene was butchered today? Is this all for you or are you sharing with the other families? I have to wait about 2 more years for more burger.
