It has been about 26 years since I have had a kitten and I am a little unsure of what this littles ones needs are. I would love to have your input to make sure I am doing this right.
We found him on a back road after dusk on last friday night...he weighed 14 ounces! I figure he is about 5 weeks old. I got some kitten chow, kitten wet food, pedi-lite and cat sip milk stuff. I warm it all up and kind of vary what is in his dish 4 times daily. We did go to the vet and found out he had round worms and an upper respitory infection. Medicines for both and is now at 1 1/5 pounds :-). He is not using the litter box very well but other than that all is good.
I am wondering how often I should really be feeding him (vet not much help???? which was strange) and any hints on how to get him to use the box and any other wonderous bits of of info you might have.

What a blessing you are for that kitten! Once he starts feeling better he'll get the hang of the litter box, his mama didn't get a chance to help him. What did you name him? Carol

I found a kitten about a year ago similar to your story and fed her as much as she could eat (she weighed a pound when I found her). If your kitten has worms, that might be the reason for not using the litter box. He's very lucky that you found him. I'll never understand how someone could abandon a kitten.

We had a teeny tiny bottle baby two years ago, and he was stubborn about the litter. One thing we ended up doing was putting him in a dog kennel at night where if he wasnt sleeping on the towel, he was in the litter box, so the box was most of the kennel. I would also put him in there if I was in the shower or couldnt watch him for some reason. It worked.

Free feed the dry food, and give wet food 2 times a day, only as much as he'll eat at a time. He doesn't have his mom to teach him about the litter box, so you will have to do that like Amanda said. Once he has his adult teeth, you might want to wean him off canned food (makes for really stinky poop), and continue with free feeding dry.

Four times a day should be plenty. As long as he is gaining weight, you are on the right path! Usually cats take right to a litter box pretty quickly. If I were in your situation, I'd keep him in a bathroom w/ a box, unless you are holding him/playing w/ him. If he is allowed 'free range' of the house, it is too big an area for him and he'll 'go' indiscriminately. After he eats a meal, I would set him in the box and take one of his paws to scratch around in the litter. Typically, they will catch on very quickly. If he does have an accident, put it in the box, so that he can follow the scent to the box for next time.
I use a scoopable clumping litter and I LOVE it. It is more expensive, but, to me, lasts a whole lot longer. :0)

Ohhhhh, how wonderful you found the dear little thing!!! He's one of the lucky ones!! We have three inside rescue cats and our two sisters were found, along with 9 other tiny kittens, along a country road. They were about 5 to 6 weeks old. We fed them Science Diet Kitten dry and some canned. We just left the dry food out and let them "graze". You may want to call one of the Animal Shelters or Humane Society in your area..........they should be a huge help!! Bless you and take care of the baby! Hugs Lin
