Posted - Jul 02 2010 : 11:30:48 PM Well each year I have to do it. Sky's hair grows up to 6 inches long and very dense. She has a hard time getting her undercoat (think sheep's wool. Seriously) to shed out so I shear her instead. Most people "shave" their dogs. Their dog's probably have coats that will clip. I tried shaving sky with the clipper length guards on and it was.... a disaster. An unmitigated disaster. Nora would have done a better job.
So I finally decided enough was enough and she was getting a buzz cut. So here is my poor dog:

And yes, I had to leave the lion poof on her tail. Her tail looks weird without some sort of fur on it and it is really funny to watch her chase her ball with the poof on the tail!

Posted - Jul 03 2010 : 1:40:31 PM Alee, I love the cut on your pooch. My dog, Penny the Pooch, gets a cut like that, except I can't bear to cut any hair off her tail. She has the most beautiful flag of hair that just waves in the wind. When and if the heat ever comes, Sky will love you for it.
Wanted to ask, what breed is she?

Posted - Jul 03 2010 : 12:29:34 PM How funny! Horse clippers are not cheap but nothing else was working so we went ahead and got some. It's suppose to hit 80 here on Monday so I need to clip her this weekend. Hugs, Channah

Posted - Jul 03 2010 : 12:20:25 PM Channah- Horse clippers are the next step! In about 2-3 weeks Sky won't look grey any more, her undercoat which is grey will have finally shed and her black guard hairs will be growing back in. When we pet her right now we get rolls of wooly undercoat coming off. She has been much happier today and not gulping as much water.

Posted - Jul 03 2010 : 10:43:36 AM Thanks for the reminder Teresa- Luckily Sky is a pampered City Pooch. She spends most of her time with us either indoors or waiting until evening to go out. So far in her 7 years she's never experienced a sunburn and the bugs seem to go to her face more than her body so we use essential oils when necessary to keep the bugs off.

Posted - Jul 03 2010 : 08:27:41 AM Just remember that when you clip/shear/shave a dog, you also take away their natural insulation from the sun, and natural protection from bugs, so now they can sunburn, and all those biteing flys and skeeters have no problem.

Posted - Jul 03 2010 : 07:07:00 AM Hi Ladies-
Yes, she does get a bit embarrassed whenever I clip her. It's really quite amusing. I felt really bad the first couple summers I did it.
Kristin- yes, I did it myself. I have a clipper kit I bought and at first I tried using the plastic blade guards to leave a little length on her. The previous clipper set I worked well with their blade guards, but this kit...well the results were much less than stellar, so I set the blade to the longest setting without a blade guard and ran it with that and with the lay of the fur.
Sky was much happier last night though- much more playful and she slept with us on the bed which she usually stops doing as soon as it starts warming up because it gets way to hot.

Posted - Jul 03 2010 : 06:21:54 AM Alee, she's so cute. Did you do it yourself? I had to shear some of Bubba's fur but it's so thick I only got a little bit. I even used the goat shears. I guess I could have gone deaper. I had him up on the goat stanchion and he did not like that at all. But I know your dog will be so much more comfortable without all that hot fur.
