for snakes at the chicken pens. I was out feeding the girls yesterday and hubby walks around the side of the pen and screams watch out! There on top of the pen laid a nice big black snake! Now Im not the type who is scared to death over a snake that is unless he startles me but gee I have been wondering why I didnt have any eggs. Now I know, dont just look for the critters on the ground look on top of the pen too! So needless to say hubby killed him and hung him on the fence so hopefully his dumb mistake will give us some rain! lol

Snakes freak me out!!!!!!!!!!Little, big, black, brown or skybluepink!!!!! I was almost bitten by a copperhead when I was about 10 and that did it for me. I still freak if I turn a page and a snake is on it and if a snake is on tv I still pull my legs up! I hope I never get a snake in my house because I'll have to move. I know there are snakes around here but as long as I don't see them I'm fine. Saw a water snake crossing our lane when we were driving on friday so now I'm EXTRA vigilent about LOOKING everywhere. If I'm in a pet store I steer clear of that isle! |

Thanks girls! DH took him for a looooog ride. He'll get killed before he gets back here. However, I'm sure he has relatives still here! We will also re work the baffle, maybe doing it double, two different types. I think he was so long he just was able to go over the baffle. Still makes me cringe thinking about it! Going to talk to our bird store man today for suggestions.

Catching them and taking them somewhere won't keep them from coming back. They will go either where they were born, in the same area, or where they find the food. One day last summer I went down to the basement to empty the de-humidifier and when I moved it there was an itty bitty snake there. I went outside to get my son in law but when we looked again he was gone. I am sure he is still around. As small as he was it was definitely born here. It looked very funny because it was this little snake all coiled up with its head sticking up. But little snakes grow into big ones. And I CAN'T STAND THEM!! I agree with Jenny, dead on a fence. EWW!

Oh Ruth that is so sad, i love watching my baby birds grow ours was on the inside part of the roof of our front porch, we were very surprised that the mom laid there as much traffic as our door gets but I guess she was smart as all the traffic would probably keep off snakes and other predators.
At our old house I walked in the pen to find a snake curled up in the coop, with an egg in his mouth, looked like he had already had one and was trying to get the second one down. That's the only time I kill them is if they are eating my eggs or hurting my girls. Otherwise I take them down the road and let them go. Of course I wouldn't like them in my house either, unless they are pets.

Oh my goodness! I CAN NOT STAND SNAKES!!!!! I would have had a fit! Well, hopefully, your girls will lay doubletime to make up for the lost one. ;)

I have a NEW snake story, very sad one too! We have a small tv camera in our blue bird house. We are on our second brood, they had 5 babies the first time, all made it out safely. This time there were 3 babies. Today they were 14 days old and they usually fledge on day 16 -all was well when I turned the tv off last night at bed time. When we got home from church this afternoon, I turned on the tv and saw a huge snake in the nest box. I yelled for DH, he ran outside to the birdhouse. Inside it was a 5 ft long black snake and no baby birds! We have a large baffle, and a small hole opening on birdhouse, don't know how that beast got in there! I'm trying to think that maybe, just maybe the babies left the nest last night. They fledged last time late in the evening. DH took snake for a long ride and let him go. Don't ever want to see him again!
I am sick to say the least! We have watched the whole process, from building the nest to egg laying, hatching, feeding. The whole process is amazing. Will go to the bird store in the morning to see if Mr Tom has any ideas on how he got in there. Other than he was so long he could get around the baffle.
I'm very sad and mad !

HOly crud! I am sure glad it isn't snakey here...I am not scared of much of anything...except snakes. Dead on a fence is a good place for them! I am sure they have their place..as long as it isn't on MY place...haha. I would never forget to look up again if I were you!!!

Yep, they do go up in trees! Didn't know that till I was at a friend's house in NC looking at their garden. Down came a huge snake right in front of me - from a large tree branch over my head!
Scared me silly! We had a little one in the house a couple of weeks ago, my kitty was playing with it - have no idea how he got in, but DH took him up the road and let him go. DH likes snakes - not me! But they do have their place in creation, just not in my house!

when we first had them in our house, my dh used to catch them and put them out but they kept returning so he finally starting killing them. The hawks were pretty happy with that.

Kris, I have no idea how it got in the house, the window wasnt open but there was a window right over the towel rack. I have always been suspicious that my husband did it but he denied it..

Snakes most certainly have their role on this earth and I so wish they wouldn't fighten people so because they need to be understood and respected for the good they do. I would freak if a big one crossed my feet too, I have to say! Such a dilemma with the legless wonders!!

them snakes are getting the rodents that are contaminating your chicken feed, and rats that will eat your eggs, so they're not such a bad thing...

We used to have them in the house when we first moved in here. The house was empty a long time and they were eating the mice. The was no carpeting on the floor yet and they would crawl through the wall and out under onto the floor. First one we saw was in the basement. We see them outside sometimes. Had one in the chicken coop laying along the top edge of the nests. My son saw that one and I don't collect the eggs anymore. One of the guys does.

They climb trees too. And buildings. When we first moved here we found a snake skin in the rafters in the garage. And the big huge 15' long skin I found in the chicken house on top of the wire nest box. It was laid out across the top and it was at least 12' long plus some hanging over. It took me a long time to go look for eggs in there again. And I will not run over a snake because I am so afraid it will get up inside the car. Those things are so sneaky.

I once came out of the shower to a snake hanging on my towel bar. I screamed, ripped the shower curtain down and made my husband break the door down to get in.

Yep, I had a tarp over a leaking hen house roof once, I had it caught in the people door to keep it from flapping around. So, I went down there one day and opened the people door to go inside and a big rat snake fell out from under the tarp and landed on my feet, we danced around a bit before we got loose from each other. Needless to say, the roof got fixed pronto and I look up a lot now.
