I'm bummed out. Yesterday while I was out in the yard checking out a deer at the feeder, a hawk swooped right down and stole one of Isabella's two week old baby chicks. I have never heard a sadder noise come out of a chicken. :( I wrote about it here on my blog.

Darn hawk, anyway.

We've been feeding the foxes too. I am amazed at how brazen they are. Out in mid-morning in the blistering heat....and at noon time. We've had to give up on free-ranging, which breaks my heart, along with the loss now of a hen and two roosters. And, I have to admit that one of the roosters was my beautiful, amimated favorite. I miss them.....silly, I guess.

On the bright side, the hens have begun laying! We now have five eggs. We got the chicks in early March and they just have begun to lay. They are good girls.

How horrible! Is there any way you could build a chicken pen that had chicken wire over the top if it too?

I feel for you. Seems we have been feeding a fox - 3 hearty fresh chicken dinners so far. It is hard.

This is so sad. How upsetting this would be. After I realized I couldn't run & catch the hawk, that's when I would have cried. So sorry this happened.

Angela--regarding barn owls, they are endangered and also eat primarily mice that would otherwise get in your grain or your house. They should be protected at all costs, not shot at, even if it is to scare them off. Bullets don't always go where you want them to.

You know what? Its a bummer, but its ok. Its life. And Kris, like you said, at least I know what happened. It was weird how I just happened to be walking out in to the yard (to sneak a peak at a deer) when the hawk came down. Otherwise we would have been wondering for a long time what happened to the little chick.

We butchered our rooster 4th of July weekend - he was attacking everyone (human). I got one too many bruises after carrying out a food bucket and water and said "That's it." I have often wondered since yesterday if Brownie still was here, if the hawk incident would have happened.

Amy, that's awful. Poor baby. I hate when that happens. At least you know what happened to yours though. I had 16 chicks hatch and am down to 8 now. I have no idea what happened to them. I have not heard a hawk around lately. But I have 2 roos that will warn the ladies of danger and they all run for their lives. Maybe chicks don't know to do that yet. I am so sorry he's gone.

Oh Amy how sad. :( I can imagine how you feel as we are getting closer to the day when ours will be free ranging....
We have one who lives in the woods just behind us. Every time it comes near our yard though, the crows who nest in the trees at the edge of the woods harass him until he goes away! So even though I really don't care much for crows I'll let them stay!
It is illegal to kill hawks- hefty fines too, but shooting a gun full of buckshot upwards scared off 7 hawks that were flying over our house last month.
One of our golden retrievers- Bear, is really good about barking at anything bigger than a seagull that is flying in his sight. For some reason we have also had a lot of turkey buzzards around this year, and they will occasionally swoop over the house, the garden and the chicken coop. When they do, Bear lets us know about it!
One of hubby's hunting friends told us if we keep the dogs near to where the chickens are during the day, it might help deter a hawk.
Poor Isabella, I am sad for her too.

That is soo sad :(
I can not imagine. I have been outside and seen hawks coming and ran to shoe in my chickens. Most have caught on and now go running under something.
I feel for you chicken, she must feel so sad.

God Bless

Oh no! Poor Teddy :( And poor Bear, all lonely now :( And poor Isabella and her little broken chicken heart :( That mean ole hawk needs to be taught a lesson! I understand he has to eat, but can't he go eat some wild mice or some other kinda worthless rodent? Why the poor baby chick. I would have cried.

Oh Amy I am so sorry! That is horrible when that happens - Mother Nature can be so cruel. I love my tall grass - great way for my girls to roam around and be safe. My llama also keeps a close eye on them and has scared away hawk, owls and foxes - my girls listen to him more then myself but anyway to keep them safe.

Hugs to you

I'm so sorry to hear about that! Is there any way to get rid of them that is legal?

I was preparing to start free ranging. I think I'll look into a large chicken tractor instead. I would be after the gun as well if it happened to me. We also have a big old barn owl that lives in the abandoned barn next door. I bet he would be after my little ones too!

This is one of the many reasons why I do not free range my chickens...I am sooooo sorry.

I was at work one day and my bosses wife called in a state, I heard him say u cant do that it against the law. A hawk had come and taken away two of her new chicks and she asked him where the gun was she was going to take care of the hawk.
