Posted - Jul 14 2010 : 11:16:01 PM I have been so busy over the last month that I haven't even been online.
But I just couldn't not share our exciting news!
On the 4th of July we brought home our two little Nubian doelings:-)
They are ADORABLE!!!
We've been trying to convince my dh for 6 months and he finally said yes. Our children are very involved with 4-H and decided that they wanted dairy goats. I was just as surprised as dh. His big joke with the kids was that they could get a plastic goat and put it in the yard. He finally caved in when I cornered him and explained that if the children were going to do this we had to make a decision because the deadline for the "bill of sale" of the animals for Fair was a week away.
We're all really happy with Ellie Mae and Coraline. Ellie Mae's dam won Grand Champion at the Fair last year. I'm not sure she will do as well because she was one of quads and she is so tiny. Coraline looks like a better bet in the show ring.
I am really excited about all this! I never knew I wanted goats and now I'm totally in love with them! I have spent the past few weeks getting a super fast goat education. I'm looking to getting Coraline registered. Ellie Mae will be harder (probably impossible) because her champion mama was a "rescue" and her pedigree is unknown.
Another benefit to all this is the future milk. The children and I have a hard time with cow's milk but we do fine with raw goats' milk. We've found a wonderful source nearby and we've been enjoying having a little milk back in our diet. The lady that we're getting our milk from has a herd of Nubian and Nubian/Nigerian Dwarf (Mini Nubians) goats. Her milk is the best goat milk I have ever had. And she makes wonderful cheese too. YUM!
I always though goat milk was terrible until last summer when one of my bookstore customers brought me some of his. I tasted just a little to be polite and I was totally blown away at how good it was! That was the beginning of my "goats are fabulous" transformation.
I love going out and helping to tend the goats. It is so grounding to me. I have a feeling that in a few years the kids may lose interest but I already know that I have many happy goat years ahead.

Posted - Jul 19 2010 : 08:48:15 AM How great! And welcome to the world of goats, as several ladies have said. I love my goats. My DH has even begun to get attached. He said," I wish we would have realized how great these goats were from the time we moved here, [three years ago]". I was taken back. He really likes them all! Good luck and keep us posted!

Posted - Jul 15 2010 : 1:45:43 PM Welcome, it is going to be a fun, wild ride. Sweet tasting milk is matter of nutrition management, this is not hard to do, consistant good feed, unmoldy hay, and goat minerals are all you need. You will need a goat savvy vet, find out who the local one is and see if you can get a mentor, another goat person you can call and ask those silly questions to. Also, you can make delicious goat milk ice cream, goat butter and I haven't found a recipe using milk that goat milk did not work as well or better.

Posted - Jul 15 2010 : 05:22:46 AM Cindy, welcome to the world of goats!! I love them too. I have 4. 1 being a Nubian. She of course is THE most vocal of the 4. But my favorite. I don't tell them that though. I am trying to sell 2 of the Lamancha does so I can get one more Nubian. Sandy's milk is so good and rich.
I hope you and the kids have so much fun with these two girls. Your life will be totally different now.
