Okay...I'm sure yall are sick of me by now but I'm new to all this!! Well like I had told you befor Maizy has a wound like area in the middle of her udder where it hits her belly. She has what I believe was a slight case of mastitis in her 2 left quarters. Calf has been eating from the right side only and is 1 month. Just began milking this past sat. Milking 2 X a day and treated her 2 left quarters with mastitis med and have been cleaning the wound with iodine and bag balm. Gave her 2 shots of penecillian. Those left 2 quarters have only been giving me 1/4 cup of milk each and that side seems really hard still while the right is soft. There are no more clump coming out of milk except one hard piece that came out of the left hind quarter....any suggestions on what to do from here or what it might be?

Sorry I meant a cup out of each teat on her left quarters. When I milk the right side its about a quart to half a gallon...but that is the side the calf favors!

Imaizys last shot of penecillian was sun night I did put mastitis meds for lactating cow in her teats on sat night. The calf is feeding off of her and I also milk her twice a day. I am waiting until next week to see if the milk is consumable. this morning when I milked her it seems as though I got about a cup out and that the hardened areas were softening some what. I have been massaging them before milking her to try and break it up. The milk does not taste salty so I am thinking that maybe it is still hardened from freshening? Called the vet and she said that I am doing everything correctly that since maizy has actually become nicer and her temp went down that she believes it is getting better. Does anyone have a recipe for a peppermint salve with disinfectant to use on the udder? Thanks ladies!

I would be concerned too. YOu should for sure be able to get more milk out. I was going to suggest www.keepingafamilycow.com as well...those gals on the forum there are so so helpful dealing with anything family cow related.

hi girls, i would be seriously concerned about a hard udder. it can be dead infection cells massing. if it gets rock hard you can lose the quarter. yes peppermint essential oil mixed with any light cooking oil. castoe oil can be added. the castor will penetrate 4 to 6 inches deep. it will carry the warmth of the mint or you can use cayenne pepper instead on udder. warm to hot packs milking way more often. every few hours. the idea is to get the stuff in there moving. draw it out the teat. put the antibiotics up her teat at night when you will be sleeping. every day every day till she is completely clear. huge commitment. she needs vit. b complex a natural vit. e for stress. kris is right as i suggested a while back. go to the cow site and ask for help under 911. the woman ALL know there stuff. i have been through this with 2 cows. one died one lived. this can get worse and go systemic. please go to family cow. joann and rena mitra lannie many smart all cow woman who milk. hope this helps. time matters with this issue.. but if you use castor oil anything on your hands will transfer to the oil and onto udder. please be sure your hands are clean. i know this is an obvious thing just my thoughts at the learn as we go silk purse happy days sherrye

I wish I could help you. But isn't there something you rub on the udders, like peppermint? It seems like Sherry had a problem like this with one of her cows. I hope she sees this. Also Jenny. Have you been to www.keepingafamilycow.com? They know so much over there. And have seen everything. You might need tojoin that forum. All about cows.
I hope you get her better soon. That can't be much fun for either of you.

Don't know how far out in Montana you are, but I would at least try and talk to a vet. Mastitis is a funny thing. She could still have some swelling and inflamation from calving. In my limited experience with dairy cows, I've seen hardness and swelling last weeks after freshing. Are you strippong out ALL teats, even the mastitis ones? The mastitis med, this might sound stupid, but was it for dry cows or lactating cows? Was it something you syringe up the teat? You will definately need to get a handle on this. You don't want her quarters to get bad enough that she may only be a two or three quartered cow. Also, is she the only cow you are milking? What are you doing with the milk since you gave her the penicillin? Is it just for your consumption or is it sent anywhere?
