Posted - Jul 20 2010 : 1:07:26 PM Tala got taken to the emergency vet last night. She has been coughing but seemed to be getting better and hadn't gone off her feed. Then she started going down hill on Friday evening. By yesterday she was bad enough we had to take her in.
Usually she would be more closely watched but I didn't realize that the barn manager was gone for the weekend and the stable hands were running the show. It goes without saying that they don't really recognize when a horse is sick.
So she has pneumonia with a bacterial infection in the blood. :( She also is very dehydrated and sore from breathing with her flank muscles. They have her on IV fluids and antibiotics but we are going to have to bring her home because we can't afford the Hospital care. Luckily I have some vet training so I can give shots and such and I will be making her a mash to eat and hopefully keep her hydrated. *sigh* Poor horse.

Posted - Aug 16 2010 : 10:05:38 PM Thanks Betty Jo- Tala is better now. We are just in recovery phase now. She lost a LOT of muscle so I am doing a lot of walking with her and letting her run in an arena to her heart's content (this horse loves to run) so she can get toned up again. I expect her to be ready for some light riding by Thanksgiving. I am going to be doing lots of ground work and conditioning work up until then.

Posted - Aug 16 2010 : 6:31:21 PM Thanks Renee- they did offer to let me apply for those but I am rebuilding my credit so i wasn't sure that I would qualify. Maybe I will apply anyway just so I have it for next time. (there is always a next time of some sort!)

Posted - Aug 05 2010 : 9:41:03 PM Alee, Yes, look into Care Credit or Farm Plan. Or, maybe the vet would be willing to take payments for afew months. Glad to hear she pulled through.

Posted - Aug 05 2010 : 09:51:10 AM Alee, not to get too personal, but does your veterinarian use Care Credit? Our vet does and it's through GE Money and like a credit card. They even have a deal where if you pay it off in three months you aren't charged interest. But they also take regular payments. We have used this when the vet bill was higher than expected. Mayber your vet takes payments, I don't know. Just a thought on what has helped for us.

Posted - Jul 28 2010 : 11:19:09 AM Tala is doing much better. Last night I took her into the large out door arena and she played race horse (not as fast as normal since she is still recovering) but no wheezing or coughing. I think she is out of danger.
US...well...the bill came at about the worst possible time financially for us, but we are going to be okay. It'll just take a couple months to pay off our loan.
Thank you all for your concern! It means so much to me!

Posted - Jul 24 2010 : 5:42:43 PM So far so good! I am going to ask the vet when I can start her back on some gentle exercise. Since her medicine is fed as a powder on her food (grain) I can imagine she is going to get a bit stir crazy in a few days. But then again she did drop a LOT of weight in a short amount of time so it is possible it might take her a while to have energy again. When she starts screaming at the other horses or at me when I pull up- I'll know it's time to get her out and about again!

Posted - Jul 23 2010 : 8:36:52 PM Sarah- I know what you mean!
I went and saw Tala again tonight. Lots of manure in her run - about 7 good piles. Since she had completely gone off all forms of feed for several days it took a while for her GI tract to fill again. I also noticed urine areas so that is excellent. She always was active and alert. She came up for scratches and tried to get away from me when I was spraying fly spray (typical). So I know she is feeling much better. My stress levels are going WAY down. Thank goodness!
