Hi Girls! Thought you would get a kick out of this. I have never seen anything like it. Every summer I put a hummingbird feeder right out my kitchen door under the window. All summer we have swarms of hummers. This year, we have a new visitor, and he keeps sucking the feeder dry! Check out this downy woodpecker who keeps coming back and helping himself to a drink whenever he likes. He's making the hummingbirds nuts! They don't want to share.

Too funny! Much better to have this character stealing sugar water than poking holes in your roof! If you have another feeder, you could try hanging it about 10-15 feet away from the one your woodpecker visits. That might be enough to ease the hummingbird's tension about their oversized guest. I've had a family of Flickers with four young ones who have been entertaining themselves by pecking through the cedar shingles on our roof this summer. We've already repaired several 2-4 inch diameter holes and I caught them out there again today. Aghh!

Crazy thing came back again today, and sucked the feeder dry. Now the hummers are all at arms and keep buzzing me as I sit on the porch, like little tattle tales. I have new food made, it just has to cool. He really loves that sugar water!

That is too funny! I have never seen a woodpecker go for the sugar water like that! I hope no one tells my woodpeckers about it, we have a zillion of them around here! I'd be broke refilling the feeder!

Giving him some peanut butter packed into holes you've drilled into an old big branch that you've had to prune off might take the pressure off the nectar feeder. Personally I think he, is it he?, like a bear has just found a good feeding spot and as long as there's easy pickings won't work harder for his dinner.

We do have maple trees...is that why he has sugar tooth? It is so funny to see him but he keeps sucking the feeder dry!

That guy has a sweet tooth! Do you have maple sugar trees on your property? You've spoiled him rotten.

What a bad bird! Looks like you might need a few more feeders now.
