I have two pigs that I bought this last weekend. I am taking them to butcher in October. My dialema is that I dont know if I want to ring their nose or not to ring their noses. What are your thoughts on ringing or not ringing.

Kelly thank you for sharing that about letting them out in the pasture. I may do that.

We've never ringed our pigs' noses....When we built their pen, we buried panels down about 8 inches then put rocks on in the trench, then filled with dirt. They've never gotten out through the fence. We let them into the pasture often, though, just so they can run around and play. If they're a little stubborn going back into their pen, our corgi helps us herd them back. Pigs are awesome!

I vote no. It really does not do a whole lot of good anyways. A good electric fence works wonders.

Kim, I'm so glad you deceided against it, rings are cruel. I bet the dogs and pigs will become good ol friends...

Thank you ladies. Thats just where I was going with it. So far, I dont have a problem of them trying to dig under the fence. I thought about this before hand and dug a trench and sunk the ranch panels that I have for their fencing. BTW: last night, my two dogs were running around the pig's kennels, the pigs were inside runnign around with the dogs. It was funny to watch them all play. The dogs lick the pig's faces and the pigs snort at the dogs's faces...Its quite comical.

I surely would not. A friend of mine said when the pigs have rings in their noses it hurts them to dig around.

I wouldn't. It makes my nose hurt just thinking about it and I find you can get most animals where you want them to go by bribing them with a treat (grain, corn etc)

I had thought about doing it with the next batch of pigs I get. Because the last 2 times they sure did make a mess of everything and everywhere they were. But then I think that's how God made them. To root around and be happy. I guess there are certain situations where you might have to. But I think they are fine without the rings. And I have actually seen pigs in pastures with other animals grazing just like them. They might have a little area where they like to wallow in though.

never have, never will, there is no good reason to do so...
