Well, this is the 4th unsuccessful try to get my heifer Mazie back home. And always with different people and in different ways. I just don't know what to do right now. We left our truck and trailor down there tonight. The guy who owns the place where she is is going to try to get her in the corral tomorrow and load her up in the trailor with a few other people. And tonight we had my friend and 3 kids and another friend had come to bring his cattle prod and got stuck in the ditch on the way out. So had to get him out. What a mess. I am just ready to leave her there. Nothing is working so far. And now she's getting wary. She's been there too long now. Since the middle of June I think. But she will still come to me. She just won't get in the trailor.

I'm just a little sad right now. And worried that I might have to leave her there. If we ever do get her home, I will have the bull come here! Or maybe try to AI her. This is way too much trouble. And it's too hot!

I knew I had read that you had a cattle prod there when you were trying to load your girl, (your first post to this thread), that is why I assumed you had tried useing it, I wasn't saying you were doing anything wrong, I was worried that it was being used several times, and that would cause stress...peace

If its not too late, try placing a pan of her rations in the trailer. Feed her only in or near this and gradually move the feed pan inside closer to the back. May take some time but certainly can't hurt

Michele, I went down last night by myself and got her! It was so easy. SO she's back home and in the pasture with Roxie. I am going to start working with her. I just need a big ole halter now and a better lead rope. The one I have is old and worn. But right now I'm just happy to have her home.

I have found that the less people the better somtimes. My cows are used to me, so it is easy just for me to get them in the corral. And of course haveing good hay or grain in there helps too. Also the smaller the area the better. Our corral has a "chute" around the outside. It keeps them moving in a circle, and then they have no where to go, but on the trailer.
Having strangers around just seems to get the cows more nervous. Since she is a heifer, I would get a rope halter on her, and have a big guy on the end of the rope. If you are planning on milking her, you need to beable to work with her.
Good luck
Michele

I forgot to say I have never had Mazie on a halter or rope. I guess now I should have. I am with Roxie though. She has a halter on all the time now. And I lead her all over. She's pretty easy when she's not being ornery. She's been a little better lately. But that's my mistake with Mazie not leading her around. I wish I had.

Thanks everyone for all the good advice here. There is a door at the head of the trailor. I have a lead rope. We just need a long rope to do what Teresa is talking about. That might work. Or try to blindfold her.

It is very frustrating. She has become part of the herd now, she's been there so long. We might just have to get her to just follow me home walking. Maybe have several cars behind us. And in front. I don't know. We'll get her here one way or another.

Thanks again. I'll let ya'll know when she's home. It's supposed to be 100 today. Too hot.

oh kris i know the feeling you have right now. so frustrating. the only thing we did different was the rope thing teresa talked about. we did that for the other cows. we used a horse panel we could push forward inside the ring. we used it against their but. the cow is in the ring with the trailer. we then grabbed the single panel and pushed it against their butt. we were on outside of ring walking and pushing the panel against the cows backside. then when we had it forced to edge of trailer we shocked the butt at same time we pushed panel. it worked but just an idea for you. sometimes it works and sometimes not. will she stay in a portable ring? you could hold back feed anf grass. she could get very hungry. then they are more prone to go in trailer for food. we find if we leave trailer in pasture put hay in trailer and leave ring and trailer open they will go in eventually for the hay. feed goodies inside trailer a few days. then she gets used to going in and out. cows are curious. if no one or nothing happens to them when they go in they will.if there are goodies for her in there. she will go in and out. when you want her in you put goodies in. cows hate lots of people. we hide. we wait the hard part. then sling the door closed.i can talk the talk. i am not good at walking the walk. lol this all sounds great. doing is another issue. lisa is my farm girl hero. she can load animals fast and quiet usually. i know slow and easy is important. not my strong points. so heres my hat off to you and all the folks helping. its a helpless frustatrating feeling. catching them up is so exhausting. i am going to raise all my calves to lead and load. let us know how it goes. happy days sherrye

I had a horse for a while that wouldn't go in the trailer. Bought her and then found that out. To finally get her on the trailer a guy blind folded her, walked her around in circles to disorient her and then she walked on. That only worked once. Then when I knew she needed to go to someone else we were back to the trailer issue again. We'd walker up to it and she wouldn't get her foot in it, or she'd get one in and that was it, backing back out. Then I decided to make a noise behind her and that worked. One person held the lead rope in the trailer somewhat taught so she could only go forward. I tied a plastic grocery bag on a stick, snuck up behind her, and shook it at her behind. She startled and jumped in the trailer to get away from the noise. I highly doubt that trick would ever work on her again, but she's a much happier horse in her new home and now trailers just fine with lots of practice. I don't know if you've tried anything like that already, but I really do hope you get Mazie home soon.

Sharon

Well Kris, I would have no idea how to get a cow in a trailer. I am sorry you are feeling sad about it. Keep us posted.

Does she lead from a halter?, if so, use a long lead, go thru the trailer, out the escape door, and back behind her, knot the end of the rope , (this will have to be a 40 ft rope), get 3 or more people on that rope, keep it snug up against her butt, and pull, it will work like a pulley system and she should go in, even if you have to use the stinger end of a lunge whip and or prod, as soon as shes in shut the tail gate even if you have to leave the rope dragging, or cut it. I "AI" all my cows, so much easier and safer for all.Good Luck...
