Posted - Aug 21 2010 : 1:00:25 PM well i thought bell deserved her own post. no calf yet. we know one is coming. her bag is soooo big. she so far is a sweet heart. i am going to try pics. bell was a rescue cow. some know her story. she was in a bad dirty place. skinny and had mastitus. she was listed for $850.00. we bought her for $250.00 and some eggs. she was a 3 teat cow with mastitus in a rear quarter. wormy and thin. with lisas help we got her condition up and bred her to a registered mini jerey bull A.I. so far she is a dream. she now sees my red jeep on the road when i am coming to check her. she gets up and comes to the gate. beings she is a smaller girl i will get less milk than lisa. fancy is huge and gives 7 to 9 gallons a day now. her heifer calf grace is only 10 days. bell and fancy are girl friends. they were together all winter. now they are apart. so bell needs me to be her companion. i am using this to my advantage. right now i am using the brush to call her in. i bang it on the fence, she comes to get brushed. it i hope will help her take the long 8 acre walk to the milk room without me. then i will cross road with her to my milk room. she will be in barn at night and go out in morning for day after milking. so today we have clear mucous. she is licking her belly. she is restless. it has to happen in the next 24 would be my guess. but girls what do i know really. its a baby papa says it will come when it ready ma. ok gee whiz already. what is in there? i want a girl but as per the normal i want healthy calf and mama. so i will keep you all posted on her progress now. full moon soon so calf will come. happy days the learn as we go happy farm today. oh ya and we have 2 chicks cracking out of the shell today. the mama hen is very busy. the weather is 80 so good for babies to be born on the farm. sherrye

Posted - Aug 30 2010 : 10:09:50 AM hey there kris, you are so right. with 3 cows and 3 calves its hard to hear. today i will blast roy orbison. that way i will not hear it.lol so yes tod milking. she just gave me 2 and 3/4 gallons. calf gets for now 1 1/2 gallons . i made colby so far. its raining here. so maybe some mozz. today. hard to believe in the high desert rain in aug. papa just came in the door. he had to come home from work to put long pants on. it is really raining here. i love it since its so rare in aug. sept. here. well belle is kicking me. so i may have to buy a cow cant kick. her udder still seems big after i milk. so i need papa and lisa to check me. my milk can weighs a ton. not complaining though. i love love love all this milk with cream. if i had left calf on she would get the cream kris. i will always pull the calf. i tried it both ways. buttercup would not give me milk. belle is from a dairy. she is ok with me pulling calf. she is only concerned if sophie cries. they are together. there is a fence between them. they sleep side by side at night. the fence is wire and stops sophie from being able to nurse. both girls are ok with it. with the beef cows they will not wean their calves. i had a year old steer dinner nursing mom. well mom had a new baby freckles. kinda cute. BUT baby freckles was not getting back teats where fat is stored for calf. so we pulled dinner. hippo the mom is large and has belted in her. she had enough milk. BUT not a good thing for me to let happen. so out for dinner.lol i see a lot of the girls are walking. thats a fine thing. happy days sherrye

Posted - Aug 30 2010 : 09:17:28 AM Sherry, so glad everything's working out for you and the girls. We have lots of cows around us and that's the saddest sound in the world when they take the calves away from the mothers. I just want to cry too. They go on for days all day and night calling their babies. I hate it. It's so sad. But I guess it has to be done. I will have to one day. Maybe not. I will just keep Mazie's calf with her til it's time for it to go to the butcher. And that's a lot of milk. Is that TAD?

Posted - Aug 30 2010 : 08:31:24 AM patti ann, what a very nice thing to say. thank you so much. sophie is drinking 3 pints now. i think by tonight she will have it figured out. when we first start she does not get latching on. i put it in and then she gets it slimy with spit bubbles and then she takes it if it comes out of her mouth. she is running and jumping sideways. so cute. she is a girly girl. she stepped in poop last night. it stuck between her toes. she was kicking and jumping. she was trying to get the poo out of her hoof.lol she shines like a new penny. so i need to go milk belle. the neighbors are weaning 3 calves. 2 will be ours. 2 girls. so the area is ringing with crying calves and mamas. poor things. it will take a week.so belle is giving 2 and a half gallons out of 2 teats so far. i am so glad. happy days sherrye

Posted - Aug 26 2010 : 4:09:59 PM howdy girls, wow do we have forest fire smoke hear. air quality warnings out. patti ann is coming to visit this week end yipee. her daughter selina will get to feed the calf. kris i am pulling the calf in the morning. if you remember buttercup did not share very good. she held up her milk and kept all the cream for her baby cocoa. so this time isabel gets no calf. they will see each other and be in same barn for now. as bell adjusts she will then go out to pasture for the day. she will be in barn at night next to her calf. milk fever is common in high producing cows. it is so sad for bell. she must really hurt. those 2 quarters that do not work. well the bag is full of milk. she has to reabsorb that milk in those 2 quarters. the teats do not work. very sad. she is going into milk fairly easy. sometimes the calf goes into the milk room too. sophie sleeps on the stall mat while i milk.when i pull her tomorrow it will be over as far as going with mom. they will be seperated by a fence after today. we have fire planes going over the house. high winds too. the planes use the runway at the airport here for oregon fires. so we have them right over us when theres fires. sophie is sooo very cute. oh boy..today she got to go out on yhe lawn with mom. she ran as fast as she could. then sideways then right out of the fence. she is so little. i had to put her in 3 times. so back to the barn so i could take a break. getting ready to go milk now. her teat is still bad where its cut. i see it was draining a minute ago. so doctor sherrye on the way. happy days sherrye

Posted - Aug 26 2010 : 10:45:18 AM What a sweetie. So are you letting her and the calf stay together? And how long do you wait to drink the milk after calving? I will need to know these things soon. So I better start asking now. I am so glad she is over that milk fever. That's a relief I'm sure.

Posted - Aug 26 2010 : 07:54:57 AM no darn, she will be a 2 teat cow. she was so neglected at her last home. the man knew nothing and did not bother to learn. he turned her out to pasture with out checking her. she carried mastitus in that rear quarter for 6 months. the other quarter was broke when he got her from the dairy.we understand broke. so its ok if she only has 2. the one that is cut is her GOOD back quarter. it does look better. i am in need of an antibiotic ointment that calves can get in their mouth. any ideas girls. i am using iodine udder wipes and bagbalm on it. its about 2 inches and the skin is peeled back. she will not let baby nurse that one. so i am milking it out totally with the machine. she is such a good cow. even as a 2 teater if i can have some milk i am happy. most of the livestock here are rescues. she can be happy here. i may breed her again. not sure yet. we will see how she does. i also need to find out her age. the vet can look at her teeth and guess/ well i get to go milk a cow now yipee oh and her fever is gone. i will check again this am though. happy days sherrye

Posted - Aug 26 2010 : 07:29:36 AM thanks alee for posting photos for me. you are so nice to take your time to do this. isabel is a great old girl. she is a super mom. i dont think she has ever gotten to have one of her babies. coming from a dairy they pulled the calves right away. so tday i start with a bottle. i will be home all day to work on this. sophia wants to run all around and jump now. i will let them out today for awhile on the mini pasture i have. it has been a long journey to get this little calf. she is priceless to me. thanks for all the congrats. Kris you had ask me about bull size. yes it does matter how big the bull is. she has to hold him up during breeding. plus size of calf. sophie is a registered mini bull seman from a bull that throws heifers with large udders. we got our supplies to tail bleed hippo. if not bred back we are going to ai her to the same bull. private pyle. owned by AnneB on kfc site. happy days sherrye

Posted - Aug 24 2010 : 7:10:06 PM Oh my goodness Sherrye, what an experience! I am a city girl and I want to thank you for including us in the journey that you gals had. I am so glad that everyone is doing well. As I said I am a city girl so I have learned so much through your adventure. You know everyone says that cows are not very smart but you ladies have proven them very wrong. I have to share a quick story....I was up north near our cabin, I was driving past a farm with several calves and moms. It was feeding time and there were 4 adult cows eating out of a large round thing filled with hay and there standing in the middle of it all was a calf who was just enjoying the company. I had to take a picture so I parked my car, had a conversation with the adults and took my picture. I was very shocked at the reaction that I got...not sure if they were happy with me or not! I am hoping that they were happy to have me stop by. Now I feel like I am part of another sisterhood. Congratulations to you ladies! Karen O.

Posted - Aug 24 2010 : 6:38:52 PM Sherry, I hope Isabel is ok. Is her teat going to heal? It should. It sounds like what my friend went through with her Jersey this last time. Almost lost her. But she's fine now. Does this happen all the time with milk cows? I am nervous now for Mazie. I am so glad the vet was there to help out. I hope you're able to get some pictures on here. I want to see her. Take it easy and get some rest when you can. She should be ok soon. And the baby sounds like she is nice and healthy.

Posted - Aug 24 2010 : 2:09:00 PM when i went out this am bell was going down. she had milk fever. she was starting to quiever. down she went. curled her head in and was a sick girl. my friend bryce tried to find her at 3 am she could not. so i think they were in the ditch for the night. isabel has a gash on one rear teat. had to be a quarter that works that was cut. anyway i gave 2 bottles of calcium sub-q. she was better in about 20 mins. she got up and with lisa and her sister leanne we walked them to my barn. then to the milk room. happily the vet my here jake came. she has a temp. so gave prevail. lots and lots of edema. so gave her shot for water retention. there are food withdrawl times but i want her ok first. so looks like the 3 teat cow is a 2 teat cow. the man that had her sure messed her up. poor old girl. well what she is is ok with me. she is a good mommy. i am going to give the calf colostrum from lisas cow after we all nap. the calf is latching on and nursing. but with just 2 teats we want to be sure baby is ok. we are watching for clean out too on mom. he gave her oxytocin to get things moving along. so sophia is so pretty. i am hoping someone can help me post pics. i could forward pics and maybe another farmgirl would post pics for me. patti ann is coming soon she may be able to do it. such a cutie pie calf. about 50 pounds we think now. happy days sherrye
